I am wondering if it would be possible to tether a ps2 engine to a protosound 1 engine and bypass the ps1 rollers so that the motors are being controller by the ps2 electronics only. Could this be done?

While "anything" is possible, practically speaking the answer is no.

You would have to put a PS2 slave board into the PS1 engine. The PS2 board itself isn't rated to run 4 motors.
