Barry,
I did purchase the book and picked it up at Kinko's today. Can't wait to start reading. Again thanks for sharing your knowledge.

You must get tired of typing that phrase, Barry! Smile I have a solution...

MTH should include a copy of your book with every DCS system handheld. It can be on printed or on CD. It wouldn't cost them more than a few cents to include a CD in the package. And even if you got less royalty per copy, you'd probably come out way ahead! MTH (and you) would get less questions and operators would get answers quicker and be happier with their DCS systems. It's a win-win.

Actually, I don't type it, I just drag and drop a text clipping.

I figured that, but it made a great preface into my idea about including your book with every DCS handheld.

I'm still hoping that MTH will change their mind and offer them for sale at York. The price will have to include their cost of printing and that seems fair to me.

I know that I brought this up before for the April York and Barry learned that MTH wasn't interested. But maybe with more time to plan it wouldn't be a burden.

It should be offered as a free issue to users of DCS, it enhances the use of their system. Being an E book, MTH should just pay Barry for writing it and E mail it out to all owners of DCS systems.

The current copy has a disclaimer on page 2 to avoid this problem.

You could print out the web page with your order confirmation and show it to them; that might be sufficient for the doubting-thomases out there.

I've noticed that a large number of of Forum readers are taking thier CD's to places like Kinko's. If Kinko's wants $35.00 for B & W and $100.00 for color, what are the other places charging? I might be better off keeping it on CD and using my trainroom computer.

I got mine printed (black and white), color cover, spiral bound with clear plastic cover and dar back cover at Office Depot for less than $20. Took about 15 minutes. Walked in with the CD, walked out with the printed book.

JDA,
Thank you for input. My first bad experience on the Forum. I guess we can't mention Weaver, Lionel, MTH, WBB and so on. I guess we will be advertising??
Thank you for the educational experience. I know now.

Barry-

The Somerset 4-H Trainmasters thank you for "saving our bacon" leading up to and during last week's fair! The book is clear and concise about the use and set-up of multiple handhelds and TIU's. We added a TIU to the 9-module yard this year and everything worked well. It is very cool to see two or three DCS and/or TMCC engines working a yard!

Do you have any thoughts about the combination of heat and humidity on DCS? We operate outside (covered) during the fair, but temperatures can easily get over 90 degrees. Combined with high humidity, it seems as though DCS gets a little wiggy in the mid-afternoon. We shut DCS off for 2 hours on Friday afternoon and it worked fine after 6:00 p.m. I am thing that the heat on the handheld combined with the ambient heat on the TIU is affecting the signal.

Doug,

Heat is the nemesis of most things electronic. I would suspect that it's the electronics rather than the DCS signal that's being affected by the heat, however, that's just a guess on my part.

I did not read through this whole thread, but just wanted to post that I purchased Barry's book, and found it to be very helpful. I highly recommend it to anyone contemplating the installation of DCS.

I purchased the original version and was wondering if I can download the updates only, or do I have to download the whole book again?
Thanks

You have to download the book in its entirety, however, there's no additional charge.

If you printed the book, there's a list of changed pages near the top of this thread that you can print from the newer copy and replace in the printed copy. The pagination will not be affected.

Barry,

I must say the book is amazing, I am in no way a newcomer to model railroads, that said I am wiring a large new layout with the DCS system and figured I would go ahead and read your book prior to starting the project - it was well worth it, I have not had a problem yet and there were numerous points/tips and suggestions in your book that even with a good amount of experience I would have never thought of. It was very satisfying to apply power and have everything work as it should the first time! All of my signal readings are 9s and 10's and my son is loving life & loving his train!

I do have a question that I did not see in the forums anywhere and I have not found a reference to anywhere on the Web or at Atlas or MTH sites (I am using Atlas Track) I apologize if this is not the right place to ask, but again I could find no other reference and I figured if anyone would know you would.

The question I have is about controlling my atlas turntable (a small dc motor) with the MTH AIU. I don't believe I have found anything that references this hook up anywhere and I believe the challenge may be the timing function of the turntable or it may be that the AIU is not designed to work with a DC motor or device???

I may be making more of this than I need to, but I thought it would be cool to have everything (all accessories) hooked into the system vs. any manual switches or controls on the layout.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

Again the book is incredible - for those on the fence about whether or not to buy the book - get off the fence before you hurt your self and buy the book, you will not regret it!

Marc
Thanks

Dave Hikel published the answer to your question some time ago. I've included it below.

Hey Barry,
I've been working on new plans for my O gage layout and decided to incorporate the DCS system into it. I purchased your book last night & glanced through it today at work, and all I can say is WOW! You've really touched all of the bases in this publication. I'm sure once I get started laying track (early next year I hope!)I'll be back here asking some questions. Regards! Mark

Barry, I'd like to download the book but have a few questions..Can it remain on the computer to be read without printing the document and can the document be saved on a flash drive to print or move to another computer at a later date?
170 pages may overwhelm my printer.
