We have 2 tiu's and 2 remotes. (1) set was bought new, the other used. The used one at Rev 4.02 will not recognize an engine on the tracks, or give it a number and it will operate, but it does not have the engine name and also aboveall the function keys says MTC MTC MTC MTC MTC. It operates the same whether used as a remote or tethered. I then hooked it up to a 3 foot section of FastTrack. Both remote or tethered it would pick up new engines on the track. But as a remote, even 10 feet away from the track I would get a check track or Maintenance required message. I had opened up the remote and checked that the transmitter board was secure. I feel I did all I could, would you send it back to MTH ? it is old but has a new thumbwheel is it worth it or just buy a new one. I look forward to your feedback. Also does it matter whether I send it back or it goes through a dealer? It's long out of warranty. Thanks, Dave

There are several other things to try before condemning the set. First, change the batteries in the remote. Second, check for sources of 900 MHz interference such as a cordless phone. The next thing is to make sure the TIU and remote are both loaded with the V4.02 software. You can check the TIU's software version with the following key strokes:

MENU / SYSTEM / TIU SETUP / TIU VERSION

You should also see if the problem is isolated to a particular channel on the TIU.

Give those items a try and report back.
