I'm thinking about keeping the radius for my 0-36 EL line. I have seen some steep prices on E-Bay for certain sets not sure why but I don't want to break the bank on it. What do you guy's like and why? Thanks

Chris,

If you are going to be using tight radius curves on your el, I would stick to the RailKing sets. You're right about the outrageous prices being asked for some of the more desirable sets like the R21's and the World's Fair R36's. However there are others out there that run very well and can be found for a reasonable investment. Good examples are the R26 "greenbirds" and any of the R12 sets. They run well, are plentiful and can usually be found at very low prices (especially at York). If you're planning on using MTH DCS, I would look for the Proto-2 sets. If conventional is your thing, there are some R26 and other older sets available in Proto-1 or even with "Locosound."

Hi Elliot. I'll be running it on my 0-36 Fastrack and I am running DCS so Proto-2 is a must. I will check out some of the railking sets you mentioned. Thanks for the help. Thanks

To put it very simply, York is the ultimate train meet. It's sponsored by the Eastern Division of the Train Collector's Association and held twice a year, for three days in April and October in eight separate halls on seven acres at the fairgrounds in York, PA.

You'll find all of the national manufacturers and most all of the national mega-dealers there. Additionally, there are hundreds of smaller dealers, private seller tables, layout displays and more (not to mention scrapple and funnel cakes Big Grin)

The York meets attract thousands of attendees from across the nation and I guarantee you will not be able to walk all of the aisles in a single day. To attend, you must be a member of TCA. The 2009 Fall Meet is October 15-17 go here:

To answer your original question, Chris you probably want to stick with the Railking sets as Elliot said. I know it still needs some updating, but in this list you can see which sets were Railking and which were Premier along with a pic of most of them. May help you decide which sets you like.

Nahhhh Stay away from the work trains. They're ugly. I would go for the cardinal red R12's One of my favorite Railking sets behind the R36 and R21

The white R12's are probably the best buy when it comes to Railking sets They were the last set to have the M logo too. There is also the two tone grey R12 too. Can you tell I like the r12

Go first to the large Orange Hall, then next door to the small Brown Hall

New Subway sets are sold by the dealers there and by Justrains in the Purple Hall

Find very few used subway sets in the large Blue/Silver, Red or White Halls

Notify that prices may not be lower than on ebay, but you save on shipping

At York Thursday Oct 15, 2009 I saw an R-21 Loco Sound set in the Blue/Silver Hall and bought the R-36 World's Fair add-on cars that were in the White Hall.
That seller also had a few more older subway sets. I saw none in the Red Hall.

This year, York had fewer new subway sets in the Dealer Orange/Brown/Purple Halls unlike previous years. The latest 2010 MTH catalog shows no additional new NY subway models, just a few re-runs from either 2006 or 2007.
