As I move to clear my wood lathe table of all the kits and projects piled on it, I located these and thought they might be of interest. Seems that there was once another MTH in the model train business, Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

But, in the queue right before them is a traction flat car to get built - also an MTH kit although getting a few modifications....

You must have a half century of work waiting on your workbench.
No worry about boredom from nothing to do. Nice work, as usual.

Actually, my bench has never been more empty, Big Grin And, continuing to get it, my lathe bench, and the rest of my shop emptied out of train projects is a major goal for this summer. The truly scary place is the closet in my office - stacked full of kits!

Here's a door & 1/2 traction freight trailer that I picked up off ebay and am repairing and upgrading. Not a kit but some one else's scratchbuilding project....

Got the side boards and curved end boards into place as well as added the scribed siding for the top decking...

Have to trim it to shape now, add the stake pockets & stirrup steps, install the radial couplers that I just made, drill & tap the bolsters for 4/40, and put the trucks on, add the brakewheel............and then it's ready for paint.

Well, got the decking trimmed and have added seom home made radial couplers using Kay-Dee's mounted to some brass stock with the assembly mounted using some wood screws.

I guess that I could use the nice PSC couplers but they are not operational and cost about $10 a pair more than these [Big Grin]

Added stake pockets from Grandt ine and some Kemtron stirrup steps, I decided that a flat car trailer was just a litle boring since I already had 1, so this gets turned into a gondola!

Wish I could take credit for that KD radial coupler, Lee, but I can't! There was a set on the freight trailer that I bought to restore and the idea was too good not to copy and put to use! Big Grin

Thanks! After I get that load chained down, it's back to the stock trailer kits - one to build as per the instructions; one to bash into a stock motor car, Eek

Jim Osborn of Columbus Ohio. Hell of a nice guy. In addition to the flat trailer and stock trailer kits also built trolley poles and custom built trolleys.
As far as a motor stock cars. Vane Jones had an article and plans for one of the cars on the Terre Haute ,Indianapolis and Eastern that later were Indiana Railroad .Only 2 or 3 were built. This was in Traction and Models Magazine. Don't know what issue.

Yes, but I know I have the plans in my shop - just about a complete set of T&M on the shelf - great resource for any traction modeler!!!

Well, I opened up the stock trailer kit and it's actually pretty spartan - no detail parts at all and a baggie of color coded small pieces of wood.

Following the instructions - so hard....usually the instructions are the 1st thing to be discarded, [Big Grin][Big Grin][Big Grin] Got the body assembled.

Marked up the ends for rounding them as per the instructions....

Got the body mounted to the floor after rounding off the ends....

And, added a little sheet lead for weight - after I paint the interior and put the roof on, you won't be able to see the lead anyway....

Basically completed the stock trailer now - just needs paint & finishing. Goes into the queue with all the other cars for when I switch my shop over to be the paint shop....

Now, off to the 2nd ofthese kits to bash that into a stock trailer - got the parts ordered from Q-car already - well, other than the drive, Eek

Finally got back to these and finished them off.

Here's the flat car kit car that I turned into a ballast gondola.

Thanks, Lee!

Really a pretty basic kit for teh flat car, but it really can be dressed up with some detail parts - replacing the clunky stake pockets it came with and using Grandt Line ones, adding the Q-car anti-climber on the ends, some Kemtron stirrup steps, and few other odds & ends helps a lot!

In the back of my mind in a dusty corner I've been contemplating casting an entire flat car as a single unit; just add decking, details, and paint.....

if you did a flatcar casting, it could be used for a flat, a gon,
a motorized flat or pillar crane. One would have to have 5 of them
to be able to make every type of car possible.

I've even seen photos of motor flats with loads of hay bales,
cases of whiskey, barrels of beer, as well as railroad supplies.

You have just hit upon the reasoning that was behind the development of my regular flat car kit - a flat car is what's under just about every other car - the underling basis and platform for an endless array of cars!

I like it, Martin. Where'd you get the shovels?

Not entirely sure -- I want to say Berkshire Valley or Wiseman Models, but I have this lingering thought that they might be from a pack of some older CHB tools that I scored off the bay a long time ago.

Wiseman does sell some scoop shovels...

Thanks! Don't think I've seen them from Berkshire Valley, but I could be wrong. As good as they look, I'd go with CHB.

And I didn't mean to distract from your work. Smile

Yes, probably CHB; good looking tool castings are best grabbed when seen and stuff like that falls under the detail parts heading of "you can never have too many....", Wink

Here's the completed car that the MTH stock trailer kit builds. Pretty simple to build, actually; just took me some time to get it painted and to install a "tarpaper" roof, and to get some dry transfers that would fit on the small letter boards.

And, here's the simple flat car with its loads.

All my traction is generally lettered using dry transfers from Clover House for the CG&W --> Chambersburg, Greencastle & Waynesboro, aka the Come, Go & Wait, Big Grin Big Grin
