Some folks might not realize that during the war, some old
New York gate cars went to California to move workers to and
from the big shipyard in the Oakland area. Here's a link to
a photo of one of those former el cars, now at the Western Railway
Museum.

It's a great photo site, where every day,
you're linked to photos taken that date,
in years past.

Zach,

On the photo of the Q train, what are the middle tracks used for, or are they being used at all anymore? That would be a great scene to model.

Hi GG1

The middle tracks in the Q photo are indeed used. They are the express tracks used by the B route, Brighton Beach to 145 ST Manhattan and extended to Bedford Park Blvd during rush hours.

Those Express tracks are not used for regular revenue service. The Q Train Shot I took happens to be a re-route. The Q Train is a Brighton-Line train, however, this photo was taken on the Sea Beach N Train Line. The Q Train was rerouted from DeKalb Av, down the 4 Avenue Line, and over the Sea Beach Line to Coney Island because of a track fire at the Brighton Line Prospect Park Station. So, those express tracks are only used for re-routes, and yard moves, and sometimes layups.

The photo is from the Sea Beach Line, not the Brighton Line. So these express tracks are not used in regular service...
