Wellll - bins for picked up trash? Quite a bit of it accumulates as its picked up at each station. Maybe space for a few replacement station trash cans for any that might be damaged, were set on fire, etc. A 4 to 5 car train length might be used for better or safer operation, in signal detection, braking, going through third rail gaps at crossovers and junctions, etc. Ed Bommer |

In NYC, if using R127 cars (they look like windowless R62's) in trash-collection service, thre are usually just two of them.
In hot weather, they may take a single-unit R62 along for the air-conditioning (speculation--I don't know for certain, but it's a likely explanation--the R127s' don't have A/C). If using Redbirds, they may be a car class that only exists as married pairs. I've seen video of trash-collection trains in Toronto--apparently they just carry bagged trash inside old cars withdrawn from passenger service. (must stink to run those ---PCJ |
