I know i have been out of New York City for over 13 years now...but when did Grand Army Plaza get moved to Central Park?..last time i checked it was still on Flatbush Ave by Empire Blvd/Prospect Park???
I guess someone forgot to tell MTH this in while recording the R-11 announcements...initially i thought the chip fried when the set was in the station stop mode Brooklyn bound and it stopped at what sounded like "5th ave./Grand Army Plaza...next stop 14th Street/Union Square"...after running it again..yep Grand Army Plaza...then 14th Street....Hmmmmm?????

Perhaps they meant, 'The Plaza Hotel' which is right near the 5 Av/59 St Broadway BMT Station.? Just a thought....

There is indeed a BMT stop at "Grand Army Plaza" at the south-east corner of Central Park at 59th Street and 5th Avenue in Manhattan. There is a large monument in the park at that point, memorializing the Grand Army of the Republic. This is where the famed Plaza Hotel derived its name. The BMT stop here is actually "5th Avenue," with the sub-name "Grand Army Plaza."

There is also the Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn on the north-west corner of Prospect Park where Flatbush Ave. joins Eastern Parkway at Vanderbilt Ave.
To avoid confusion, BMT would not use the same name for both stops. The Brooklyn stop is "Grand Army Plaza" with the sub-name "Prospect Park Plaza."

The two identical place names for Civil War memorials date back to before the consolidation of the City of Greater New York with five boroughs. Before 1896, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx and Richmond were separate cities and towns. New York City back then was only Manhattan. Brooklyn was the largest city on the USA at the time. The cities of New York and Brooklyn created their Grand Army Plazas separately.

If the next announced stop after "Grand Army Plaza" is "14th Street", BMT express stops for 57th St., Times Sqaure, and 34th St. are missed. One would think that at LEAST they could have thrown in "Times Square-42nd St!"
