Here is a vid-cap I took from the movie trailer.
Can Chris or anyone else confirm that this is an MTH Subway car? |

MTH hasn't released their R-142s yet. I don't even think they have the tooling yet. Kawasaki did make a 5 or 10 car O gauge model of the R142 that the MTA is in possession of - it could be that...or that could be an actual R142. A lot of the movie was actually shot in the system, and in the original a single R17 was broken off from the train and ran around the system...guess the modern version uses the 142. Rich Dornhelm alos scratch-built a set of these in O.

Skip
Its got a logo on it It cant be an MTH |
I thought the stars of the original "Pelham" were R21s.
I didn't think they could separate the 5 car 142's into single units, at least not easily.
There was a very inconsistent mix of R17s and R21s...LOL and everbody complained about Extreme Trains - shooting a documentary style show with no control over the trains and people expect full continuity - but a movie under controlled circumstances has 17s and 21s mixed and not a word. I believe the choice of the R21s was to enable the hijackers to shoot through the rear window. Would have been very difficult to fire through those R17 portholes.
Right, I have always been impressed by the way hijackers select cars to match their shooting skills. It's so very realistic. Mark |

Mark-
Actually, I was thinking of the movie director's choice of car doors in framing his shots, not the fictional characters in the film. |
well, now they'll have 3 big picture windows to fire through. Just hope the movie producers paid close attention to details, or this crowd's gonna rip them a new one.
wait...but I thought the MTH R-142's were supposed to be out in July?
and for the movie don't they use an R-62 mocked up as an R-142?? Exp train to Gladstone making stops at South Orange, Maplewood, Summit then all stops to Gladstone |
Yes. An R-62 was made into an R142 for the movie. There were pix of it on subchat a while back. It sat in WestChester Yard off the 6 Line for quite sometime.
that explains why that trailer pic looks funny. The roof detail is off for an R142.

The original Taking of Pelham 123 was just on the retro station on Comcast TV. It starred Walter Matthau. It ended about 10 minutes ago. A pretty good film.

I saw the original on the big screen at the Avon Theatre in Stamford, CT a couple months ago. That was a lot of fun.
Here's an NPR story on the original and re-make... http://www.npr.org/templates/s...05265109&sc=fb&cc=fp Check out the Subway Section here at OGR! Chris C. Shaffer TCA 08-62434 http://www.trainweb.org/subway/index.htm |

I saw the last 40 minutes last night; they threw 2 red herrings at the end and I took the bait
Red Herring #1: would they discover the roll of bills that fell on the floor when he was hiding the money Red Herring #2: He hid the $$$ in the oven where the cop was gonna go to get a light for his cigarrette Of course the sneeze at the end gave it away and the ending then came about 2 seconds later; surprise! About the freakiest part of it is when the bad dude steps on the 3rd rail and fries himself Maybe next time I'll see the whole thing |

The original was on last night..anyone notice that they pass the Madison Hardware stop at 23rd?

Finally got to the theatre last night to see the new one. I thought it was very enjoyable. Seemed like just the right amount of "updating" and script tweaking to make it new and exciting while staying fatihful and paying proper respect to the original. Glad I got to see it on the big screen. If you haven't seen it yet, I suggest you get out there before it's gone. Things don't stay in theatres long these days.

Did you notice Denzel ,making the Yankee reference. I wonder if that was his idea?

My wife and I thought that was very funny with Gandolfini saying no, then quickly saying "Yes, of course!". Politicians always become a big fan of the local team. Reminded me of when Hillary became a Yankee fan. Made me sick.

Went to see it the first day. Walked out half way thru' it. Waist of money and I only pay $6.00 being a senior!

I saw the remake last Friday after having watched the original twice. I liked the remake almost as much.
The one thing that disappointed me about the remake is that it seems to show less of NY than the original. When I watched the original I felt I got a good idea of what the NY of the 70's was like, the people as well as the general environment. The remake's New Yorkers seem generic compared to the originals. There's very little flavor. Think of the outlandish Irish and Jewish accents in the original. And the people speaking Spanish in the subway car. The remake gives us a mayor more identified with New Jersey than NY. The people in the control center all speak the same way. Even the people in the subway car seem homogenized. Is that what NY has become? Not at all. Otherwise I will be happy to have the new one on my DVD shelf right next to the old one. Grew up riding the NYC subways. |
