MTH, in their weekly newsletter today, announced the release of their 6000 series subway sets! Yea!
There are two versions: The green and tan "sardine can" as-delivered scheme and the Bicentennial version that ran in the late 70's. As a New Yawker, these are probably the only Chicago sets I'll buy! They had a pre-production model at York, and they were sweeeeeeet! --Elliot |

I am a CTA fan and will purchase the green and tan set eventually. Hopefully more CTA sets will be made in the future.

Yeah! Yeah! Can't wait to hear from my dealer that they are in. Been waiting since I ordered in Dec'06. I'll have them in time to set-up the Subway Series layout, Cubs vs. Sox !!! I can dream can't I? |
||||
|
Anyone have any idea when these will start shipping?
|
||||
|
I just got a call from Chicagoland Hobby
My two sets are in! I'm greening and creming! |
||||
|
Picked up my green/cream set today at Chicagoland Hobby today. I must say MTH has lousy timing the Crook county tax rate when up to 11% today 07/01/08!
They do Look nice! Frank |
||||
|
I got mine too. The tax rate here is outlandish.
Stroger's son, the new President of Crook County, needed to add 1800 family members to the payroll. Fortunately I work in the County or should I say Country of DuPage. |
||||
|
I heard from Kirke @ Justrains that mine are on their way.
Can anyone post pictures and/or a descripton of the sound sets? I rode these as a kid and I remember hearing the conductor calling out the station stops however very often you couldn't make out what was being said. If MTH truly made these accurate, I hope they leveraged some of the audio clips at Chicago-L.org. Julian |

THE ORIGINAL VERSIONS ( In the museum)
THE MODIFIED Versions that MTH copied: At the IIT stop (near Sox Park) MTH versions on my layout with the other later version CTA cars: SHOWS the closer train car spacing when coupled Note that the upper long ellipsoid windows are not darkened or blacked out, This message has been edited. I have both the 4-car and 2-car set add-on ordered thru Chicagoland Hobby. The color scheme looks to be a good representation of the CTA cars, for the Forum members who received these cars, is the CTA Logo at the center of each car, as I recall, round herald, black background, diagonal CTA in white?

Can someone post photos of the green set, please?

Posted.
the CTA logo is correct, but the upper windows are clear. This is the modified versions with the center head lamp not the originals with the headline name. the outside chains from car to car are THERE but are FIXED and can not be attached from car-to-car. When I first starting collecting Lionel many years back, the only trains I had contact with were these cars. Later the Metra. So I could not relate to the steamers and the F3 of Santa Fe that Lionel made, as I never rode those regularly. Well here they are |

This is one of the best things I've bought in a long time.

Those are beautiful. I can't wait until mine arrive out here next week.
What's the sound like? I'm like you Alan, the L was the only train I ever knew until I starting taking Metra about 10 years ago. Julian |

Note that the 2007 MTH catalog shows the cars as coupled spaced --much father apart-- than they actually were made. (see the photo above and the catalog pages 38 and 39)
The closer coupling gives you the same feeling that you could actually roam from car to car while these cars were in motion;Which you could. |

These look great. Can't wait for mine to arrive. These will be the first subway cars I own. When I was young I used to take the C&NW into downtown, then hike over to the "L" to go to Wrigley Field or Science and Industry. The cars bring back fond memories.

The photos of the prototype cars show up as broken links. I suspect chicago-l.org disallows remote linking of its images, since the pics come up if you right-click/copy-paste the URL into a new window.
You'll probably have to put copies of the images somewhere else to make them show up here, or edit out the IMG tags so they'll become regular links. ---PCJ |

Guys - can anyone share what the sound is like on these??? Remember, these ran back in the day when the Conductor will announce the station stops and not the automated computer voice that exists today.
Thanks, Julian |

|
I was wondering the same thing. I know many of the audio clips on the Chicago L site have the automated announcements. I'm picking my set up tomorrow in Colorado Springs and I'll post what the anouncements are. I'm hoping they are of the Red Line with and Addison stop. That would work great with my stop stop next to Wrigley. I'm pretty certain these were long gone by the time the L started running down the Dan Ryan and Comiskey park. |

Jim - Thanks. I grew up on the North side by the Loyola L stop and I can remember when Addison was a "B" stop unless the Cubbies were playing then it as an "AB" stop. That was well before it was renamed as the Red Line.
Chicago-L.org also has clips of human conductors making station and emergency announcements. It would be great if MTH had those announcements on the 6200's similar to the prototype. Looking forward to your post. |

Picked mine up today!!! It is a Douglas-Howard "B" It is a "live" voice announcing the stops, not the canned voice. Starts at 43rd and goes to Howard. Incudes L stops at Tech-35th,Fullerton, Addison (Wrigley field), Loyola and Morse. Includes a couple/three subway stops. Got a kick out of the directions when it pointed out that the sound control was next to the "fuel tanks" I guess the third rail shoes are for looks on the real ones! Overall very happy so far. It looks great!!! Perfect color and detail. Wish annoucements had a little more "ab lib" by the conductor. All he calls out are the stops. I like the fact that the motor sounds aren't overwhelming (they are not on electrics) Haven't been able to squeel the breaks yet...But I'll work on it. I'm running in conventional, no DCS. Off to ride the "L" here in Colorado!

That's awesome news Jim. I'm especially excited since I grew up right by the Loyola L stop in Rogers Park. Thanks for sharing. Mine should be here any day now. Julian |

Wonderful news. I was worried these would be the current 'canned' station announcements. There was an article a few years ago when they came out about the voice-over guy (from Milwaukee) who recorded them. I still call it the Howard line, Ravenswood, etc - I also remember the A-B stops.

I am still awaiting the EL to arrive in Ohio.. eager to pick up my set of 6000's. Although the prototype cars were gone by the time I started visiting Chicago, I love the CTA and have many hours on the EL there. I seem to recall seeing these cars in the Bob Newhart show at times, as well as in a scene in the movie Risky Business. Great looking color scheme, cool looking cars!

My wife lived at 1331 Loyola right across the street from St Ignatius before we were married. She had moved there to be near the "L" for her trip to school. Haven't been back to that area of Chicago for 38 years, although we do go back a few times a year, always riding the L at some time, to get from O'Hare, go to Wrigley, or get downtown. |

Well, I was thinking of picking up the phone and ordering the CTA green & cream add-on set from Jim's Train Shop in PA ,only to find UPS at my door with them as soon as I came home for lunch! Apparently I had pre-ordered them last year and had no recollection doing so! They are nice and will get the power set soon. This time I will remember placing the order!
