LAMTA Blue Line in Long Beach--on the street!

Reminds me of BART in SF. You go into an underground station and board a subway. Next thing you know, you are riding on the street like a bus. Felt pretty crazy to this NY kid 16 years ago when I was out there.

Far as I know BART is underground in SF and only goes above ground in the burbs (kind of like Path). I think you are correct, like the Boston system trains go from street level to underground on the SF muni, least it seemed like that when I was out there.

Right. BART uses third rail, rendering street running impossible. Steve must have MUNI in mind. Lee |

You definitely won't see third rail in city streets BART is very much a subway/commuter line that does not enter the streets. Closest one was the Laurel line from scranton They used unprotected third rail most of the line and switched to overhead power in the city streets

Yes, Pelham, you are correct. I was on MUNI. It was back in '96 and all I remember was that all the signs I saw said BART - Bay Area Rapid Transit. Didn't realize the MUNI system was separate and that there was the actual BART which is like our Metro North. Locals out there all referred to them as being part of the same system all under BART. Here are the few pics I snapped back then...
The entrance where we got on the MUNI was for both BART and MUNI - adding to my misinformation... We boarded underground - just like the subway... A few minutes later we emerged from the tunnel and were out on the street. A very strange feeling to this NY kid... Cable Guy anyone? Now I have a reason to go back to SF - I need to photograph BART! Plan on spending AT LEAST 3 or 4 days of photography. And
you still won't see all that there is to see. Hey! Go by train (winter is cheaper), and make it a second honeymoon. Lee |

usually I take BART from SFo into the city. From Civic Center down to Embarcaderothe BART runs underneath the MUNI. At Powell Street you can catch the cable car to fisherman's Wharf (Tourist trap, mostly) Since my first love is naval ships, SF has a LOT to offer. The city is home to one of only two surviving Liberty Ships, as well as a WW2 sub and several antique ships. The cable cars were a bit unnevring, when you realise that only a handbrake and brute force kept you and several tons of overweight tourists from rocketing down a steep hill and shot putting into the bay. I even had to push one of the things....

HEY! What about the CA&E? They ran 3rd rail, except Trolley wire in Aurora, Elgin, and some portions of the Batavia branch. At one time they did operate in Aurora and Elgin streets. http://www.davesrailpix.com/cae/cae.htm Zach |
