Both. Blue stripe version was first, signed up as the "D" line. Second was the plain silver version (i.e. post-overhaul) signed for the 'E', in a subsequent catalog.

And neither is in scale with the rest of the product line. I admit, my Coney Island D is an oddball, but unless MTH reissues with a better version, I'm gonna keep this one in my collection.

Those 1st two may be shorties but it was a revolutionary thought in the model train world & when they came out it was absolutely awesome to have an actual NY city subway set

Oh I agree, no question, I appreciate it, all things considered at the time. But, aside from the mismatch with the others in terms of looks (kind of toy-like), and the fact that it seems to move faster than all my other trains, I guess I might still be feeling the burn from when I first bought it, I WAY overpaid. If it brought you happiness, it was money well spent.

But you must consider this, when you 1st bought it, you most likely see it & bought it after it was out for some time & at the point when it was probably getting scarce as it was the 1st & one & only. Like most, you wanted it & you got it for yourself. As mentioned above, having it & "at that time especially" brought you joy & that's all that counts. The fact that now many years later it shows up quite often & sells for less means nothing. For one it is only because many sets have now been issues since then & also some people now prefer the ps2 sets so some just let those go. If that wasn't the case, then the #'s would still be high. Just think of it as a car, you paid allot when it was newer & now it is worth less because there is a more advanced model, but even with that, in time both old & or especially 1st of anything become desirable again. Besides lets face it, we all paid more for certain items then others & some we even find for incredible bargains. It all works out in the end :-}

same thing happened to me Mad,i saw a movie called STYLEWARS,and at the end it had a video with some graff writer showing off the redbird and r-42s all graffitied up on a track.i saw this movie in 2000,thats two years i had to catch up,so i ran and bought this first car,only 1 car for 175$ from the RED CABOOSE in manhattan.later i find out i was severly robbed,but i turned around and sold that exact car for 250$ graffied up Big Grin.so one lives and learns Smile,no biggie it happens.this is the one.i almost want it back now.since its my very 1st one.got this in 2000

Yeah, I way overpaid too for the blue stripe version. It was the first subway I ever got - just shortly after the silver E version was released. I used the MTH product locator and at the time was under the impression it was accurate - leading me to believe there were only two left in the whole country. I hauled you know what out to Kross Hardware in LI and picked up the set for a cool $500. Even though I later realized I over paid, it was definitely worth it at the time. While it has become one of my least favorites, it will always be special since it is what started it all. It'll eventually have a special place up on a shelf, although I'll very rarely if ever run it again. If I do, I'll need to replace the battery so I don't fry the PS1 board.
