Here's a nice article about that old denizen of the subways, Curtis Sliwa, gushing about the trips he takes with his five year old son on Sundays. Best quote for me: "When we’re on the trains together, we’re like two peas in pods. I mean, we’re not even like father and son. We’re like brothers."

I had a lot of moments like that with my dad.

There are many manys sets of vintage New York City Subway Cars kept in the 207th Street Shops and The Coney Island Shops. No other transit agency has held on to their retired equiptment like The New York City Transit Authority. Thanks to the dedicated dozen or so current and retired employees who kept the cars in shape. Three different sets have been running this year. The IND R1-9 series from the 1930s, The IRT R12-36 series from the 1940s-1960s, and the oldest are the IRT Lo-Vs from 1917 and 1924. The New York City Transit Museum runs most of the trips but some have run in regular service for special occasions. Become a museum member and find out when the museum subway car trip are run. Their phone number is 1718-694-3451.
