What are your impressions of this set as an initial subway set purchase. And since I'm from Phila and a Phillies fan please don't steer me in the wrong direction.
Thanks
Tony

There are two versions of theQ cars The blue Worlds fair cars and the Green standard color They are a real nice set They do have the higher clerestory roofs. The Q cars were the oldest of the subway cars They were originally trailer cars from the 1890's and then the city rebuilt them into the Q cars q stands for Queens. The sounds are great They run great you will love them We have to pester MTH to do some SEPTA cars.

Hey blueline, I remember you saying there was an issue with the trucks on the Q cars. It would be nice for MTH to broaden their range of subway sets, and I wish theyd get the R142 out already. maybe an R160 next?

The Prototype cars ran in the worlds fair colors in 1939-40. They were painted green when they went to work on the third ave el in manhattan in 1948. MTH's models have signage and details for the worlds fair service in these colors. The green set has signage for the Third ave line and the markers are moved inward as they were in the prototype when the cars went to work on the third ave line. The coupling distance between cars is closer than usually provided for rail king cars so they look better as a model.

The "Q type" cars were rebuilt for the "isolated" BMT line that ran only between their Queensboro Station "Narrow" Platform and the 1939 World's Fair while the IRT had their own brand new 1938 "Steinway" cars for the World's Fair which ran on the Flushing Line (and could continue through the Queensborough Station westward either through the Steinway Tunnels to Times Square, or over the Queensborough Bridge to the Second Avenue Elevated in Manhattan).

These same narrow "Q Type" cars that were later re-painted for the Third Avenue Elevated were again modified to run on the former BMT standard "wide" platform stations on the Myrtle Avenue Elevated Line between downtown Brooklyn and Metropolitan Avenue, Queens until 1969.
