Pre-order pricing is generally cheaper than what is charged after they ship - the exception being poorly made and selling products which are eventually dumped on the market at whatever price they can get. I pre-ordered my R-11s at Jim's: he has the 4 car set for $430 and the 2 car for $155. Other vendors are within $10-$15 of this, but once they start shipping, their prices go up anywhere from $25 to full MSRP. In comparison to the MSRP, this set is not being discounted heavily like other sets - I think it may be in extremely high demand, so if you plan on getting one, pre-order it as it's your safest option. Hope that helps.

Pre-Order deadlines are long gone from this catalog, but some dealers hedge their bets and order extras. Check around and they may still give you the pre-order price. I would try Charlie at Nassau Hobbies.

I think MSRP was $499.95 if I'm not mistaken.

I put in an order for the R142s (Ha! sit and wait...) with Jim's Trains - he's still taking pre-orders for the R11s at the price I mentioned above.

If you live in NY and are looking to save money, make sure you factor in NYC taxes if you buy from any NY vendors - sucks, I know. These taxes are killing us...

Yeah well under the new New York State Law, he's supposed to charge tax to anything shipped to NY. Frown Not sure everyone is up to speed on that yet, but eventually they'll get there.

Are you referring to the law passed last year - the one that Amazon.com filed suit against? If so, it doesn't apply to vendors who don't have a presence of any kind in NY.

Here's something from the NY Times re the suit:
"The question is whether the vendors must collect those taxes on behalf of the state. Generally, only those companies that have a physical presence, like an office or store, in the state of the purchase are required to collect the taxes.

The new law is based on a novel definition of what constitutes a presence in the state: It includes any Web site based in the state that earns a referral fee for sending customers to an online retailer. Amazon has hundreds of thousands of affiliates—from big publishers to tiny blogs—that feature links to its products. It says thousands of those have given an address in New York State, although it does not verify the addresses.

The state law says that if even one of those affiliates is in New York, Amazon must collect sales tax on everything sold in the state, even if it is not sold through the affiliate. This is an extension of an existing rule that companies that employ independent agents or representatives to solicit business must collect sales taxes for the state".

Basically, all non-NY vendors who don't have a NY presence/affiliation of any kind (as defined by the law), don't have to collect the tax.

In the end, as always, crooked politicians trying to squeeze every dime out of the citizenry - so they can lavishly spend it. Tax and spend, tax and spend - it'll never end.

I had heard they were trying to extend that - but either way, technically YOU are supposed to pay sales tax on anything purchased out of NY as a user. Not that that is ever going to happen. That is why they passed the initial law in the first place, because nobody will own up and pay the tax on items purchased out of state. Amazon just got so big that it really started to hurt the local businesses. That is why the law was put in.
