Prairie, Never had the pleasure of riding the Newark City Subway #7 PCC cars. But, I remember them well from back in the late 60s/early 70s when I tooled around Newark in my Xerox 'Company Car' - a '68 American Motors Ambassador. Now I have a MTH PCC car in NJT colors which loops around my layout: PCC clip #1 PCC clip #2 I'm sure you'll hear from other Forum Members who have posted before on the Newark City Subway #7. Tom |

I rode them in the 60's and was very impressed by their tremendous acceleration. You would literally get pushed into the back of your seat when the car started running.
Grew up riding the NYC subways. |

The City Subway was about 3 miles from where I grew up in Arlington, NJ.
At night, I could hear the PCCs turning on the Franklin Ave. Loop. Began riding the old cars about 1951, then the PCCs, whenever my mother would let me. Here are 2 photos I took in January, 1959 with my Brownie 620 camera. I developed the film and printed the pictures myself. Then, the cars were painted in the PSNJ gray/white/blue scheme, like MUNI 1070 is today. Beginning in 1997, I made a concerted effort to videotape as much of the City Subway as possible. In the course of the following year, I ended up with eight hours of tape. With the blessing of the good folks in NJT's Communications Department and City Subway management, I was fortunate enough to cover the entire system in all types of lighting - day, night, etc. I got to know many of the operators and really enjoyed my experience. Security around the City Subway was tight even before September 11th so obtaining permission prior to visiting was a necessity. NJT police had a knack for appearing from out of nowhere and ejecting fans without permits.

Amazing!
When I was a teen (back when great sheets of ice covered the earth), I walked the entire line, including the subway tunnels, the connecting track to the Public Service underground Trolley Terminal (part of which is now used for the Broad Street Extension), and the Washington (Cedar?) Street Subway from the P.S. Terminal. I got stopped once or twice, and was told to "be careful". Lee |

Lee:
When the City Subway was operated by Tansport of New Jersey during the late 70's, we wandered around quite a bit and, as long as you didn't stand in the middle of the tracks, nobody bothered you. The atmosphere had changed considerably under NJ Transit by the time I started videotaping in the late 90's. Whereas I had been taking photographs throughout the entire NJT system for years without difficulty, it was a different story in the City Subway. One of the officers told me how to go about getting permission and, from that point forward, I never had another problem. Bob |
