Hi Everyone!
I posted this on the 3-rail forum and thought this perhaps is THE place to ask! I am in the process of looking for a supplier of products and parts in order to produce an "EL" for my layout. I e-mailed Steeltoys.com and left messages several times but no response. I called again this morning and talked to Mr. Fusco but honestly didn't feel comfortable...he seemed either "short" with me or distracted for some reason. So...are there other AFFORDABLE sources or any ideaS?

Thanks,
Alan

Alan, I don't have any suggestions for you but the pictures that Ben posted look great. Double decker EL with Bridges. I have heard that Bridge solutions are expensive and hard to get a hold of BUT THE WORK IS AWESOME.

Good luck Alan Smile

BOUGHT STOCK LUMBER. AND MADE AN EL TO THE BEST OF MY ABILTY. ITS 10 IN HI AND 12IN IN W FOR 3 SETS. GOOD LUCK TONY

Now that's funny! Razz Brian does beautiful work, but you either need an inheritance or a winning lottery ticket to get something nice. If you have alot of subway sets (like I do), you would need a massive layout which would probably cost about as much as your kid's 4-year college tuition. Bluelinec4 has a beautiful El layout - I don't even want to think about what it cost him.

I made a quickie El by using a 3/4" sheet of plywood, laying 2 sets of track over it : the outer is O-42, and the inner is O-31, I then traced the outline of the track and used a circular saw and a jigsaw to cut out the template leaving 2" wide sections connecting the inner and outer loops. I then cut dowels 12" in length, drilled 3 holes (midway) in small sections of 2x4s foer the bottom and 3/4" thick plywood (2x5 or 2x6) for the top, and inserted/glued the dowels to top and bottom. Voila! Simple El structure courtesy of Home Depot for less than $50. I then bought strips of balsa (or bass?) wood at a hobby shop to attach to the sides of the plywood to represent the steel girders. I made a station platform using a 2x3 and a section of luan board. Painted it and it looks OK - not the greatest, but very cheap.

Here are some pics of my temporary El layout - I need a big room to create the massive layout I'd like. I'm still working on the background sky, platform lights, posters, maps, etc. It's a work in progress. Simple.

I tried posting some links to the pics on Photobucket, but for some reason, the pics wouldn't show on the forum. Anyway, here's the link to my album on Photobucket: http://s982.photobucket.com/al...Steeler/El%20Layout/
