I get all my Plastruct from Brownies. They will order it for you and expect to wait a week for it. They will only do orders for $50 or more, so if you need less than that they will bundle your stuff into an order that will total more than $50 when they get the chance.

just asking, does that plastic EL setup actually work? I finally puzzled out a way to make one out of wood, it wont look all that real but it will work. I'm sure the plastic one will look better, but would it hold up my R1's or standards? Styrene or ABS? any ideas?

I admit they're good, but they can't beat the thin mints.

As I did in this video I built an el structure from scratch, using Size 268 lattice strip (Home Depot #268-LF) for the horizontal girders, and 1/2 inch square dowels (HD #8308U) for the columns. The remaining details were done by the layout owner using common basswood. The spans are connected with machine screws drilled through inch-long bits of brass angle stock (admittedly the most time-consuming part).

Even though it's almost as sectional as the real thing, it carries the biggest diecast steamers without any visible deflection under the load.

I've seen Steve Olsen's el running and seems fine. I've also seen a similar set-up in use at the Bay Ridge Model Club in Brooklyn. Each individual section has OK strength, but when several sections are put together it seems real stable.

thanx guys, think I'll head to home Depot. the plastic one looks like more of a permanent setup, and I want something easily transportable (I think) BIG Question, how do you do the curves?

Last year at I was at Chicagoland Hobby and they had plans for constructing a double track curve "L" structure. Theirs was of plastic manufactured pieces but the critical things you'll need are the lengths and the angles. Real "l" structures curve using straight beams. I'm sure someone on forum can provide that sheet.

Chicagoland Hobby's plans were using Plastruct I beams for the girders and H beams for the columns and their footer for the H beams. They have a sample display set up in the store. I does look good and leaves room underneath for street trackage.

I don't have the flyer handy, but it does give dimensions for a straight section and a double tracked curved section. For the curved section it gives the necessary lengths for the straight pieces to make the curve.

Their prices were equivalent to the Plastruct catalogue...but last I was there they at least had all the components in stock.

If I can find it I'll post the dimensions.

Steve Olsen's

I remember surfing through steve olsens site awhile back and finding a link that had a list of the exact pieces (model numbers) to construct the same el he modeled. I believe all the components were plastruct. If someone has the link I am speaking of please post it. I just tried finding it and didn't have any luck.
