...No one would dare manufacture this contraption, since only you and I (and maybe a few other die hard subway fanatics on this forum) would want one (or even know what this is!) Talk about a limited market! It probably wouldn't be too hard to kitbash a clearance test car however from an unwanted body shell. Is anybody up to the challenge?

You're right. It WAS an R12. It was converted in 1973 to a 75-foot clearance test car. Fitted with those winged appendages, it was used for tunnel and platform clearance testing around the system to test the feasability of ordering longer cars for the IRT division. Both the car and the idea were later scrapped. Big Grin
