You're right. It WAS an R12. It was converted in 1973 to a 75-foot clearance test car. Fitted with those winged appendages, it was used for tunnel and platform clearance testing around the system to test the feasability of ordering longer cars for the IRT division. Both the car and the idea were later scrapped.
