Here's a just lovely boxcab that's made from galvanized steel that I am re-assembling and re-detailing - sitting on a Weaver drive right not that's just perfect for this engine...

Looks like a lot of work ahead! But I'm sure the end result
will be great.

Very cool. Any pictures of what it will look like, maybe, almost, when you complete it? How old is this guy? I was not aware that models were made out of galvanized steel. Thanks much.

Is the AtlasO switcher made out of galvanized steel? It looks like it.

Regardless, anything I have to do to the metal to get it to hold polly scale paint really well after having stripped the Atlas paint off?

I'd imagine the Atlas model is made of zinc alloy like most other die-cast pieces in this hobby. The boxcab above looks like it was fabricated from sheet steel, much like a brass model. I can't imagine how the pieces are attatched to one another--as far as I know, steel doesn't solder easily (if at all).

Sorry for any perceived delay in responding....

No idea as to age but certainly pre-dates me - make up from sheet material and it's ~0.060" thick.

It takes solder reluctantly, Frown , but it is beginning to cooperate with my as I learn the nuances of dealing with this vs. the flux and solders that I have on hand, Wink

Not sure what it will look like when done; just going where the free-lancer spirit takes this one, Big Grin

Right now I'm working on installed some brass box stock to use for mounting that drive....when I get a few free minutes which far and fewer in between these days....

I'm actually thinking about making a 2nd one out of styrene........

Making some progress with this box cab. Here's a shot showing the mounting brackets that are soldered into place with nuts for the Weaver drive to screw up into the from underneath.

And, I've been working on the fronts making a new deck plate from some PSC etched brass - putting together the rails, steps, etc, etc....

[/QUOTE]

Slogging forward making the end platforms as separate drop in units rather than building them in place on the engine. Lots of little pieces of wire, elbows, and T's surely do teach one about being gentle with a torch and the value of lots of smaller hemostats, Wink

And, here's one of the end platforms just resting, not attached; got the end steps and poling pockets tacked on, too! [Big Grin]

It could not be for B&O since their box cab did not have the end doors.

No, just working with the raw materials that were acquired in a box of stuff off eBay and nearly tossed in the trash -- all I had really wanted were the pantographs and some other stuff that was in the box lot.

This turned out to have some potential for fun and so another free-lance project was born.

Actually, I think it has a more NH or GN flavor to it.

But, what I'd like to know is who produced the galvanized shell? I've seen 3 more for sale over the past couple of years, so this was not some unique piece.

Finally got back to this little project on my bench!

Roof screwed on, LED headlights installed and wired with a disconnect plug, pantographs mounted using nylon screws, and now painted, lettered and decaled, too......well, one side is, [Wink]

WOW! Red Face Really Nice! Wink I don't suppose you would light the Markers at the opposite ends when the headlight is turned on. Good Thread

Looking good, MWB.

BTW, those little lights on the engines are actually
classification lights. Markers are used on the rear
of a train. On the front, they indicate the class of
the train:

No lights- Operating by timetable authority.

White lights- Extra train, not in timetable.

Green lights- Another section of the same timetable
scheduled train is following.

Red lights- Rear of train...being used as marker lights.

Thanks, Lee! Wrapping this up has been long overdue..........

Sorry, the classification lights will be strictly ornamental on this engine....next boxcab project I'll consider investing in more functional lighting......

Thanks, Vulcan!

Gene,

Just upgrading the equipment on the Dillsburg branch of the CVRR; more freight traffic in the booming economy, Wink

Video will be out next month; some additional details to add and mounting the body onto the drive would be prudent as well, Big Grin

Dry transfers are nice to use for lettering!!!
