thanks james,

yea.. it can be a bit to take on.. i try and keep track of time.. and over the last 32 months of "construction.." it works out that i spend about 1 hour per day on the layout.. (of course some weeks i do not get down there during the work week and spend 7 or 8 hours on saturday).. but overall about 1 hour/day.

start small, on30 offers some super stuff and not super expensive.

thanks again for comments!

That is beautiful work, Michael. The coaling tower is very impressive. Whose bottom dumping gondola is that? Did you scratch build your trees? Paul Scoles's "Advanced Techniques for Realistic Scenery" DVD has a very good demonstration on building various types of trees...and yours remind me of these. What minimum radius are you using on your On3?

Michael,

Wonderful work! Didn't I also just see your work in the latest Colorado Narrow Gauge Quarterly? I hope that my own modeling can match your some day. Keep us up to date and I hope you will also share some of your techniques.

thanks guys!

paul,
the drop bottom gon is a berlyn model, that i "modified" to have open doors, just for the scene.

i cannot take credit for the trees.. i chose to purchase trees vs. spending the time to build them. miniaturetree.com, and others are present there.

i have a 36" min radius. but most are 40".

thanks again for all the comments!

Nice pictures of the Chama coaling tower and drop bottom gondola. I have the San Juan version of the tower, and a couple of drop bottom gondolas, but they are all still in kit form. Some day I will have the space to build them.

Michael,

I enjoyed seeing some of your new photos. Some I could not load in my browsers (Safari and Firefox); are these large files? Your new coaling tower is very impressive...a fine weathering job too!

Mike,

I just tried your web site again and the pictures all loaded quickly. We have been having some issues with our local high speed internet provider so the problem was probably on this end. Thanks for checking. Your photos show some fine craftsmanship.

I'm just beginning my On3 layout so I have a long road ahead. I built three custom switches over the past two days for the section that goes over my work bench. I'll probably post a photo this weekend after I experiment with some track painting and weathering.

Mike,

That is a fine looking scene; I really like the low angle perspective of this shot. The weathering of your beautiful coaling tower and car looks very realistic. That K-27 must have just come out of the paint shop -- it's so clean (my engines look the same way). How did you like the convention? I'll have more observations about it tomorrow...it's late now and I'm tired from all the traveling.

thanks paul.

i appreciate the comments!.. yep, all my engines look that way. have not had a chance to weather any of them. i do not have a great place to do that now, so i usually setup on my large patio outside. but the weather has not fit in with my schedule this year! i hope to be able to take them over my dads house when i visit for thanksgiving and get a few of them 'dirty -ed" up.

i did not make it to convetion this year. work just too crazy. hope to make it next year. pleae let me know what you thought of it!
