Roger, that looks great. Is the crawl area going to be a water/dock area? I was in Old Saybrook Sunday for lunch. Keep us posted.

Don,
The center of the crawl space will be a river valley. I'm sticking with the western theme, so no dock. I always thought that scenery that went to the floor was cool. Now I'll have some. You'll have to stop over when you're in the area again. |

Neal, trying my best to get it out by xmas, but its doubtful. Most likely January. I'll know in the next few weeks depending on where I am. I will not be satisfied unless its better than the first one. The video will cover things I did not cover in the first with more detail, like benchwork, switch and signal wiring, weathering buidings, track, trains, new scenery techniques etc and a whole lot of misc stuff like making coal loads, or grass fields, fences and using DCS advanced features. I'm also shooting for longer running time and higher quality video. I can't wait to watch it myself! Rich |

The new Weaver Brass CN cabooses just arrived finally some real class for the tail of my trains.
They are very well detailed, look sharp. Limited interior and you have to have the volts up very high for the interior bulbs to illuminate the sparse interior detail. Through the top windows there is a clear view to the bottom no top interior detail like seats or ladder or floor. The marker lights are well detailed but do not light. The is a heavy model and the 2 rail version rolls like a boat anchor with the power pickup off the wheels not something you would want on the end of a long string of light cars. However it should roll better as it wears in. An excellent job by Weaver though This is the other version with the white leaf running on a freight through the Rockies. From a holiday in the fall toured and rode a few trains. Cumbres and Toltec coming off the pass. Last spike in Utah these were smoking away and ran for us. Very nice rebuilds, humm should I get some Lionel Generals to repaint or I wonder if the MTH new engines in the latest catalogue are close to scale would save the repaint???? MTH engine link Rio Grande Railway Colorado was a good trip but the dome car behind looked a bit mismatched era wise though an excellent ride behind steam, but this would allow you to justify mixing old and new eras on your railway. |

Checking out the new addition to the roster:
New, old stock (conventional) Dash-9, purchased off the bay, while most of y'all were sloshing around York in the rain. Jim Route of Linganore Lines - where we still run them the 'old school' way! |

Since I model the plywood desert, I thought that this new addition to the layout seemed appropirate:

Dave Hikel dropped by with his new Brute for an initial showing. However, even at 6,000 sq ft, we couldn't figure a way for it to operate on the track (we tried). Thus, we have Brute in a Box. For those who request full sound features in the demo MTH videos, well just listen.
Brute in a Box w sound Mr. Hikel will probably drop on by with more comments on his new monster. |

Thank you, Chris.
Bob, The elevated track is supported by piers made of 3/4" MDF (medium density fiberboard). The roadbed is 1/2" plywood with masonite girder sides. I did an article on how to support elevated track in the Aug/Sept issue of OGR magazine (Run 237). It included a section on building the trestle supports. The timber trestle is made of pine wood strips cut on the table saw. Jim |

John S, that is an EXCELLENT piece of work! You even rebuilt the old Catskill Mountain house. I love going up to North/South lake in Haines falls (where the original stood) to look down the path of the original mountain railway. You've really captured it well. Great job. Please post some more shots. View our family layout at: http://home.comcast.net/~calit....cgi-home.html-.html http://home.comcast.net/~calitalia/site/ |

Raymanssr, if I didn't know of the kit, I'd have sworn that scene was real - as good as it gets. Wow. Wow, indeed. I had to look more than once to be sure. Congratulations on your artistic gifts. |

Finally got my yard wired for power at least. I don't know how you all find the time to get so much done, this took me all the free time I had! Got the chance to pull out more of my engines and put them back on the layout.

Thanks for posting the video Bill. I'd post some photos of The Brute but I still haven't liberated it from it's cage. Perhaps tomorrow. I dropped by the Woodshire RR to do a little bridge and track repair. One of the Atlas truss bridges had taken a hit from a falling branch. Hopefully by Spring the natural weathering will get the new bridge to match the old. Here's a photo of a "little" fun we had with a couple Triplexes on the same bridges last Summer. Here's another quick update on the progress on the Northwest Trunk Lines. I've added the following photo and a couple other to this update thread: Railroad construction update & Ops session - NWTL

This one's for you Brady, I caught this on in my son's back yard! And with that I wish an early happy Veterans Day today to all that served, and me too!
BTW the tie in to trains here is that I was truly on my way to shoot some trains at the Moffat Tunnel. |

Jaabat, You do the best job fixing up your buildings. Are you using a program to make your signs? If so what program are you using or where do you get them? By the way you are always fixing up your layout, especially since it was in the magazine and I always look to see what you are up to. It gives me inspiration for my small 9 1/2' by 16' Fastrack layout. That train you restored and displayed last month was awesome, the Flying Yankee. This message has been edited. I was so excited at the photos of the Catskill Mt. House & the Otis elevated railway I instantly emailed John with praise. Finally read down the rest of the post & see it caught other folks eyes as well.
I grew up at the foot of the mountain in Palenville. In 1963 ( 3rd grade ) we watched from the Rowena Memorial School in town as the placed was burned down due to its decay and hazards. Have hiked extensively in the Catskills & I believe North Lake to be one of the more beautiful spots. Standing at the top of the old rail bed is always a treat. Walking across the old concrete trestle has fond memories too; especially going down. AH! Thanks. ernie miller |

I don't usually post comments on this weekly thread, being picture challenged like I am but I have to say that the pics John S posted of the Otis elevating RR are super. They remind me of the Duquesne incline in Pittsburgh, which i'd love to model but haven't been able to figure how to make a reversing control w/ delay. Way to go John.
