What is a Lionel KW worth? About 5 years ago I had a service station replace the rollers, horn lever and cord. They also tested everything, not long after that I bought a Z-4000 and haven't used it since.

I don't know about value, but it is a nice hard working transformer. I could just never get my head around the opposite facing throttles or the constantly breaking whistle lever. A good pair of Vise-grips worked better there.

I have seen these actually sell for around $95 to $135, depending on condition, and the inclusion of the box and paperwork. Asking prices are often higher, but with the availability of new power sources, demand of postwar transformers has dropped a bit. However there are always those diehards who prefer the "old" style transformers. Like myself.

Probably won't sell it anyways, it's cool and could not be replaced for the money. It's still great for a train under the Christmas Tree.

Paul,

Glad you are doing better and are bakc o nthe forum. Hope to see at York in April. How about those Repulicans winning the Governorship tonight in Virginia by a wide margin. I bet your are a happy camper.

I think $30 for a Lionel KW means it is in poor condition. Generally, these transformers sell for between $100-125 when they are good condition, or sometimes more if they have been completely refurbished.

Unfortunately, the 190 watt KW, Lionel's second most powerful transformer during the postwar era, has always recieved little or no respect, having always lived in the shadow of the legendary 275 watt ZW. No one remembers the one that always finishes second.

I hate to tell you, but KW's are going on ebay between $45-$70. ZW's are going for between $115.-$140.

Eddie G has it pretty close. Add some more cash for like new or reconditioned or for a nice original box. Same goes for the ZW prices.

IMHO Eddie and Kent are on target for the price.
KW transformers are no where near as popular a ZW transformers, and don't fetch the same kind of money.
