Another option is you can look at acrylic cases for 1/18 scale diecast cars.
I have an Ertl clear acrylic case that holds two 1/18 muscle cars. My particular case has a mirrored bottom. I bought it eight years ago for $28 new. It is 24-1/2" long x 7-1/2" deep x 5-1/2" high. Being that it is meant for 1/18 cars, it is wider than needed for a train. With the extra room, he could make a scene in there. Just an idea. Good luck with the search.
