Last Friday as I was visiting my local discount liquor store to buy some Natty Boh and a bottle of wine the sales rep from Winner Distributing was there delivering a dozen or so 12 pack cases of Natty Boh to the store.

I asked him about the Natty Boh brand and how sales were holding up. He told me that Pabst is now brewing Natty Boh and Colt 45 in addition to a lot of other products. He mentioned that there has been an upswing in sales of the older brands as people are looking for something other than the "watered down" brews coming from the national brands.

I thought that was interesting that there appears to be a resurgence in some of the older beers that are now marketed as specialty products. I showed him my Cold 45 watch and told him that I had worked for the National Brewing company in the 70's. I mentioned to him that there was so much interest in a Natty Boh reefer that one of our forum members did all of the work to make it happen.

While Natty Boh may never sell in the quantity that it did in it's heyday, it is nice to know that the brand still holds some sentimental value for a large number of local fans.

It's funny. There are so many old brands still being brewed (and by just a handful of companies), that I sometimes wonder if they just switch out the bottles or cans every once in a while. I hope not.

I worry about that myself. The vast majority of casual beer drinkers (those that drink for effect and not taste) probably couldn't tell the difference (too many people focus too much on the label and too little on the contents). I've often thought about getting sample bottles from some of these old brands that come from a single brewery and sitting down to compare them in a taste test. Having home-brewed somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 gallons of beer myself, I know that a beer's recipe (in content, temperature ranges, brewing times) is very important in how the final product tastes, but so is the water quality (primarily mineral content - you'd be surprised at what a difference the water source can make).

Back to the topic of Natty Boh, does anyone know if beer distributors in the York/Lancaster area carry it on a regular basis? I'm thinking of picking up a case on my York/Lancaster trip.

Andy;

If you can find a distributor who handles Pabst in your area then you might have a shot at getting them to bring in some Natty Boh. The problem might be the minimum quantity that they could order like a pallet which might consist of 50 or more cases.

Perhaps they could put you in touch with a Pabst rep who could arrange to find you a case or two.

Just a thought.

I got two cases in Baltimore when I met Paul to pick up the Natty Boh car. They were only about $10 plus change per case. If I were you, I'd pony up for maybe 3 cases or so. This stuff is good and goes fast.

Just my $0.02

BTW, any word on how Paul is doing? Did I miss a thread?

Well, if there are two beer distributors in York who will only sell by the case I suppose there is some chance of finding it in smaller quantities - like maybe a 6 pack or less....I'll have to take a stroll around the area near the fairgrounds before the meet opens on Thursday and see if I can find just a bottle or two.

Here in the People's Republic of Pennsylvania, we have some strange and archaic laws concerning the sale of adult beverages. Beer can only be purchased from distributors (by the case) or from bars or restaurants with a liquor license (six packs and single bottles), so finding a six-pack is a possibility, although it may be harder to find as a six pack if it is not popular in the area.

As for me, I will not have a problem with consuming one case (will have some help), I get bored drinking one type of beer after one case and it may be a while before I want that type again. In any case, it will give me an extra excuse to keep attending York meets. Big Grin

This is a function of Pennsylvania liquor law. Beer distributors can only sell by the case. If you want a six-pack you have to get it from a bar. Look for a bar with a sign advertising off-sales or some such thing.

Odds are that, if the distributor is big enough, they will have both. I prefer bottles, too.

Just got the Miller Engineering email newsletter. The Natty Boh sign has been approved. Also, the newsletter states that 75% of the production run has already been reserved. They also give a public shout out to Paul for getting this ball rolling. Smile

PJ, the cars are all done and delivered. Your only hope to get one is to keep an eye on eBay, but considering the low production run, they will be few and far between.

Paul

Since you are posting again, it seems your surgery went well. Glad to hear it. It was interesting following the Natty Boh saga. Not being from the area, I had never heard of Natty Boh, so the car was of interest to me because of the great job you did putting together the design. The hoops you had to jump through to get this project completed were very interesting. Thanks for a great looking car, and a great thread.

Surgery went well according to the surgeon, recovery isn't the best. Neighbor called 911 yesterday when I passed out doing the prescribed 20 minutes of walking and fell out, taken to the hospital by ambulance, today the dreaded flu bug has hit. Got to go up from here.

Doing fairly well now on the road to recovery, will be back on the golf course in another 4 - 6 weeks hopefully, thank you for asking. It's been a real tough 4 1/2 months, but that is pretty much getting behind me now and the doctors tell me that I am cancer free for now. I can say without a doubt that it was worth everything to get this reefer made, especially with all the fine folks that I have had the opportunity to meet and to converse with during the process.

I'm glad to hear that you are recovering nicely Paul and that you will be back on the golf course in 4-6 weeks, weather permitting!

This entire adventure has brought all of us on the forum much closer together than anyone would have imagined. The whole concept of the Natty Boh Reefer went from wishful thinking to a completed, collectible reefer in about a year and brought all of us a sense of pride and accomplishment.

In addition to all of the trials and tribulations in getting this car made we were also part of the real life struggle you had to go through with your recent cancer surgery.

Now to see that you are cancer free and on the road to recovery has given us much more to be thankful for as we approach the holiday season.

You have all of our best wishes for a speedy, complete recovery and a happy and healthy new year!
