Securing approval without having to pay a substantial royalty was my biggest concern, so I am pumped now that will not be the case. In fact I was told that there would be no royalty since the number of cars made will be small (100 - 300) and not sold for a profit. Will post again as soon as I have information on the design and manufacturer. I lean towards the design of the steel reefer that is pictured above but on a WOODSIDED REEFER with the picture of the tin sign I posted instead of the logo picture shown on the steel reefer.

This is an interesting tidbit. I wonder if others who have done custom Atlas O runs ran into this issue and thus having to release 300-300 cars per run with a couple of years inbetween runs? Roll Eyes

Also people interested in the purchase may want to keep this in mind since 300 cars can sell out quickly and if no more can be made...well you know like a juicy steak on a grill.. may collectors would want their prized reefer pieces to be....

also note if atlas O reefer costs per piece is too expensive you do have Joe HAyter at Weaver models too! Wink Good Thread Thanks

Paul I agree that the steel sided reefer art work would look much better on the woodsided reefer with one change. "All Natural Light Beer" never appeared in any of 50's and early 60's advertising and only represents one type of Natty Boh. I think it should be eliminated and replaced with the original Boh slogan - "From the Land of Pleasant Living" "” a reference to the Chesapeake Bay. BTW to call it Natty Boh is a relatively new catch word just like Mickey D. Back in the day you just asked for a Boh. Big Grin Big Grin

I would be interested in a couple of the steel-side reefers from Atlas. It could be Master Line or Train Man. Smile I would not be interested if offered by MTH.

Spoke with Atlas on Friday and they are sending me the paper work. It looks like it is going to cost me about 8K to 9K to have the minimum of 152 woodside 40 foot reefers made by Atlas. I am waiting to get a final figure from them after the art work is done and approved, so I hope that those that said they want whatever number are serious about wanting them. I have never bought any Weaver woodsided reefers, if they are much cheaper then Atlas would the interest still be the same? I lean towards Atlas myself but it is a big outlay and since I won't be selling them for a profit I have to determine that I am not going to get stuck with a whole bunch of reefers.

Paul thanks for instituting and carrying forth with this project. I will definetly buy 2 reefers. Let's hope that everyone who stated an interest buys at least one and maybe even 2. This is probably going to be a once in a lifetime chance. I'll see what I can do to get a few of my buds to commit also.
I'd also rather have Atlas do them but if Weaver is a LOT more cost effective I'll still take 2. Wink Thanks

Paul,
Thanks again for the leg work.
I'm still in for 2. You definitely want to get the money up front so you don't get hosed, although 152 Natty Boh reefer would look really impressive! Big Grin

Let us know when you want the cash if you still want to go through with it.
Thanks again!

Paul,

I'm pretty confident that you will be able to sell 152 Atlas Natty Boh Reefers.
Like I said before, count me in for one car guaranteed.

As soon as you get the final figures for the cost of the cars I'll be glad to mail you a check in advance. No sense in you taking such a financial risk.

Thanks again for all of your efforts in getting this project going. It's a lot of time and money on your part and all of us here on the forum appreciate your passion for this project. Thanks

TrainPop and I visited Purkey's today where I bought an MTH American Beer Reefer and Chuck bought several MTH beer reefers. Purkey's has a very nice assortment of MTH beer cars by the way.

Hi Paul - I agree with Steve - should be easy to sell those out. I also agree that you should get the money up front. If these remain ATLAS I would like one as well - if you have two different numbers - will take two (2).

Probably not because:

  • side "Doors" on Weaver models are painted on
  • MAy get plastic trucks and couplers
  • Not that much delicate detail.

DON'T be a FOOL! All the work and effort is surely worth 10% min! You will find with even two road numbers on a 150 car run that they will sell quickly... esp with ads in OGR! Once you sell out, there will be those late bloomers who will demand another run[ Think of those Bob LAvessi Glueck Reefers! Red Face]... now where do you get the $$ for all that hassle? Eek

Don't just think 3 rail!!! 2 railers will want them too since with a screw driver a car can EASILY convert them. Ad both two railers and 3 railers and your #150 car run is GONE!

VA Golpher... just do us forumites a favor. Post a mailing address when you are ready to Go with this project and people will PAY up front- esp on a small #150 car run.[ Just keep GOOD records and NOte who is paying FIRST so they get first shipment. Wink] Good Thread Thanks

I have a few Weaver reefers, and while I like them (for what they are), they are nowhere near as nice as Atlas reefers. The Weaver are not as detailed, but also not as expensive. Either way, I still want at least one. If multiple road numbers can be done, I'd want two.

Personally, I don't think that you'd have any problem getting rid of 150 Atlas reefers sporting the markings of such a popular brand. I, too, will gladly pre-pay for mine.

For what it's worth, I'd like to see this in the wood sided reefer. I'm not sure why, but I think Atlas makes a superior product and is willing to work with the hobbiest more than most.

Okay received paperwork from Atlas yesterday and filling it out now. Will keep updating as the process goes along. Gotten great response so far and I do appreciate the offers I have recieved to make advanced payment which does make things easier on my pocketbook LOL! Will let everyone know how things are going along, what the cost will be when I get the final cost from Atlas, when Atlas will be actually making the reefers, etc. If 200 are made I can get 2 road numbers 152 minimum only 1 road number so am looking at stretching it out to 200 so we can get 2 road numbers, but no promises

    Ditto what prrhorseshoecurve said above.

I'd like to pay for two up front as early as possible: one reefer because I like the design; and a second reefer because how much more cool can you get than OGR forumites getting together to do something like this? I hope we'll see some more!

Wild Mary : Back in the early 70's, there was a poster of a girl in a T-shirt with a picture of Mr. Boh on one of her(ahem).... Anyway, the caption was "Can you find Mr.Boh's other eye?" I had that one hung in my locker on ship (along with a nicer picture from Penthouse). Do you remember my Dad: Art Young Jr., nicknamed "Goober" in route sales and later on a towmotor when they moved to the Beltway plant. He's still kicking at 81.

Man, what a deal. First, the Natty Boh Reefers, then the sign. Now all we need is for MTH to make a Natty Boh engine (ala Yuengling) or a switcher (ala Iron City). Then take the MTH Brewery and make into a National Brewery and we have Brewer's Hill. Hmmmmm? Might have to stick a Schaefer (sp) Brewery in there for accuracy's sake? Nah!!!!!!!!!! Big Grin

Well back from the weekend at St. Michaels, MD and received an email from the National Boh folks that the idea of using "Brewed on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay" will not fly with Pabst(present owners of National Bohemian for those that were unaware of that), and the recomended using another old Natty Boh commercial line "From the Land of Pleasant Living" which I think is just as good and can live with. How ironic that Pabst is now the present owner of National Bohemian beer. Back in the early 70's Natty Boh and Pabst were fighting for market penetration in the Baltimore/Washington area. National was number one but losing market share rapidly to Pabst.

Pabst was the the hottest brand in town despite a surly distributor and route drivers with "attitude problems". The retailers fought back a bit but the public demand for Pabst, which boasted a slogan of "Premium beer at popular prices", kept the younger generation begging for more.

This was also the generation of rebellion and a lot of the younger folks did not want to drink the same beer as their fathers and uncles.

The 70's were a turbulent time for many of the regional brewers as the National brands such as Budweiser, Schlitz, Miller and Pabst became available at prices similar to the local brands. In many cases, the National brands constructed breweries closer to the major markets to reduce shipping costs and their increased volume allowed them tremendous production cost savings versus the smaller regional brewers.

Paul hope you enjoyed your weekend in St. Michaels. It's one of my favorite spots for a weekend get-away. The Hyatt/Golf Resort just down 50 a piece in Cambridge ain't too shabby either. Wink Anyway "From the Land of Pleasant Living" works for me. Thanks for the update. I'm really excited by the whole thing. Thanks
