I am looking into having Atlas make a special run of a National Bohemian reefers for the LHS I work at. If I can get it done, would you be interested in buying one and how many. I need to get a handle on how may we can sell right off if we get them made. To me with their logo they would look great even if you aren't from the area and know Mr. Natty Boh.

If you are talking multiple road numbers and wood-sided style reefers, I'd probably buy two. If only one road number or a modern style, I'd at least buy one.

Interesting concept. I, too, would be interested in a pair of them if they were done in wood and have several numbers available. If you can't get anywhere with a small run from Atlas, contact Weaver.

I used to work for the National Brewing Company in the early 70's and had at one time a nice collection of nostalgic memorabilia.

Most of it was donated as gifts to local golf tournaments over the years but I still managed to keep a few things for myself.

I'd also be interested in a Colt 45 reefer if anyone would make it. At one time the National Brewing Company brewed Colt 45.

What are Atlas's custom run minimum orders, anyway? Do multiple road numbers count as different runs?

Maybe that number varies.
A Natty Bo car would be a great addition as would a Black Label car.

National Bohemian Wood Side Reefer (S Gauge)
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad/Fruit Growers Express reefer is one of the official cars of the 2007 NASG Convention.



The reefer convention car is based on a wooden sided, steel roof reefer with ice hatches, used in the 1940's by the Fruit Growers Express (FGEX) Co., Washington, DC. The car will have type "Y" trucks, AB brakes, 50 ton straight center sill and Ajax brake wheel on the end. FGEX was organized in 1920 as an independent private car line operating company, spreading the burden of investment among several major railroads. By the end of 1920, participating railroads included the Southern; Atlantic Coast Line; Baltimore and Ohio; Pennsylvania; New York, New Haven and Hartford; Norfolk and Western; and Chicago and Eastern Illinois. The car is available in two numbers – F.G.E.X. 1934 and F.G.E.X. 2007. The billboard reefer will display the Mr. Boh label created in 1936 by Arthur Deute, president of the new National Brewing Company. Mr. Boh is the one-eyed mustached waiter featured in ads and on labels for National Bohemian beer and was heavily promoted by the W.B. Doner advertising agency in the 1950's.

I am still working on getting them made hopefully for the LHS by Atlas or Weaver or may just foot the expense myself depending on what the bill comes in at.

Check with Buffalo Creek Graphics. They have a minimum order of 100 cars and do an excellent job. If they like the car you are doing they sometimes can split the order with you if you want, keeping 50 to sell themselves on their website, and 50 for you to sell. They usually use Weaver cars but can use other brands.
They did a Michigan Central boxcar for our club last year and are working on a Soo Line "Soo Locks Centennial" car for us now.

Sign me up for two if you get the Atlas Woodsided reefers. College in PA would not have been the same without it and Yuengling of course. I cant speak for the other forum members but I would like to be kept updated by email because I sometimes miss posts on the forum if I am away for a while.

In addition to whatever number of folks from the forum who would buy a Natty Boh reefer, Atlas or MTH would most likely sell quite a few more from the LHS's in this region.

Everyone in this area is familiar with the brand and the LHS's would certainly want to carry a supply for their in store displays.

I would think that Catoctin Mountain Trains, Purkey's, Engine House Hobbies, Kleins, French's and possibly the B&O Railroad Museum would be interested in a Natty Boh car.

Obviously, there are other LHS's in the DC and Virginia area that would also be interested in this car as well.

It may make Atlas or MTH take a serious look at making the car.

BTW, in the post about the history of the National Brewing Company it mentioned that National Bohemian Beer was the official beer of the Baltimore Orioles.

This was true as Jerry Hofberger, whose family owned the National Brewing Company also owned the Baltimore Orioles. Natty Boh was also the official beer of the Preakness, the middle race of thoroughbred horse racing, held at Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore for many years.

Wait a minnit! I have an old VHS tape of beer commercials and there was a bunch of them on Gunther beer. There were two 15 minute spots opening and closing Oriole games. "Orioles Baseball brought to you by Gunther." If Hofberger owned the Birds why would another beer get sponsership?

Correct on both Gunther, and Natty Boh being sponsors of Baltimore Orioles Baseball. Gunther was around when the Orioles arrived from St Louis in the 50's. National picked them up a few years later!

Since there are quite a number of LHS's in the region around Baltimore, maybe they should get together and approach MTH about a regional program similar to what we have in the Pittsburgh region. The MTH Premier reefers are almost as nice as Atlas reefers.

You're right guess that's what you call a brain fart, got the name wrong but he is the lawyer that made millions on the poor folks who suffered from asbestos that were dead before they ever got the money due them.

Waiting to hear back from the owner of the LHS I work at, he is checking into the minimum number needed for Atlas first and the cost per unit. I told him to get it made I will pay for it and sell them at my cost. Not looking to make a profit just get the dang cars LOL!

There was also a time Jim when Hamms Beer sponsored the Orioles at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. They had a big scoreboard and all kinds of outdoor advertising promoting the beer from the "Land of sky blue waters".

Hamms, from the Minnesota are, made a valiant effort to launch their product into the Baltimore/Washington market. They had a huge media effort and really created a huge demand for their beer.

Their goal was to take over the old Gunther brewery and brew the beer locally. While they were converting the old brewery they were shipping the beer into town via train.

One of their freight trains was delayed due to freezing weather and the beer was ruined. Rather than write off that shipment they made the decision to distribute the beer to local bars and package stores due to heavy demand.

The beer turned "skunky" and people swore off the brand thus killing their effort to penetrate the market. The brewery was eventually sold to the Schaefer Brewing Co. who did brew their beer locally.

Schaefer operated the brewery for a number of years but never had the success of National Boh.

You are right , Steve. I'd forgotten that! Now I'll be heading to the boxes in the attic to dig out old score cards, and team year books . . . .

Okay one step taken care of. Just off the phone with the agent for Natty Boh Gear. By having them made through my local train club and not making them for a profit, once they see the design to make sure that it is done in good taste (no naked women, etc. sorry Bill) it looks like they will grant us permission to have them made. Next step is to secure the manufacturer and then submit the design for approval. Securing approval without having to pay a substantial royalty was my biggest concern, so I am pumped now that will not be the case. In fact I was told that there would be no royalty since the number of cars made will be small (100 - 300) and not sold for a profit. Will post again as soon as I have information on the design and manufacturer. I lean towards the design of the steel reefer that is pictured above but on a WOODSIDED REEFER with the picture of the tin sign I posted instead of the logo picture shown on the steel reefer. I also lean towards having them made by Atlas but what ever the required number of cars needed to be made from the manufacturer will be a big determining factor. What are your thoughts on how you would like it to look? Let me know but that scale O gauge Natty Boh reefer is a step closer to reality!

Paul, that's a good simple design incorporating the logo, product name and mascot icon. Covers it all, including the B&O! Thanks for doing the "leg" work on it!

Hope it keeps on progressing smoothly, as I can't wait to get them rolling on the tracks!

Excellent news Paul. I vote for an Atlas 40' wood reefer with the design from the left side of the steel reefer and the logo from the right side of the the S gauge reefer. In the end it doesn't really matter as I'm such a sucker for Atlas beer reefers.

I'd like a woodside reefer with your tin sign logo. But I'll buy one regardless of design: I just think your project's a neat idea. Also think you should have your name tattooed in there somewhere - in the small print?

If they're made, count me in. I need beer cars to go with my Tobacco road reefers.

Paul, if Atlas won't make a small enough run, consider using undecorated Atlas woodside reefers and having Buffalo Creek Graphics do the printing.
