Don't know if theres another around in this colour scheme but its different and might have been.
Posted August 21, 2009 10:49 PM After much pondering, I think I might need to buy a Trainmaster locomotive. I have noticed that I can get a Williams for under $200. Are they as good as an MTH or Lionel? All things being equal I'd prefer a Lionel. What do you guys think?
I'm not very particular about the paint scheme.

Williams have a reputation to be bullet proof. Unfortunately, my two Williams engines were sent back to Bachmann because they squeaked only when stopping. I should have them back this week to test them. Other than that issue and one bad sound board, my engines have performed beautifully.
While very attractive SP never painted their TM's in the Tiger Stripe scheme. They were delivered in the Black Widow scheme, and later ended up in the Bloody Nose scheme.

Back in 1995 I bought a lot of Williams and loved the price and product, sold all my trains later so I do't have em anymore. The one difference is they seem to take off faster than the MTH and couldn't pull like the MTH but real nice. Back then the body paint was glossy, a little too much so. I just bought a MTH FM RailKing in Black Widow and its the bomb, pulls tree stumps, crawls like a baby and smokes like a good cigar. I'd suggest the new MTH FM Trainmaster bloody nose with the smoke and sound you can't go wrong.
The Williams locomotive tends to be very fast at low transformer settings. Using a Lionel TPC in the circuit would help. Folks at my club have wired the two motors in series and that helps greatly.
I thought the latest MTH railking was nicely done as an N&W and the new Lionel conventional classic is a nice rendition of the postwar classic.
