My LHS does (or did at least) have one on the store layout. It is a VERY nice set and sounds just as good as it looks. It isn't scale (at least to my eyes its not) but it is a big set overall. My LHS had to cut back a tunnel portal so the engine wouldn't hit it.
You won't be disappointed with it. |

I have this set and add ons. It is a great one. The engine is close to scale the cars not so much. Hight wise they are pretty good not length. Every night I can hear this go around the Mesa I live on. The sound is pretty spot on. The ditch light flash when the horn sounds.
My only complaints there is no cab interior and the last car does not have a control cab and horns. |

Not scale, bt does O-31. Nice model of a CURRENT train. M, A, L, W, et. al. need to make sets of suff children see TODAY!

I thought it was a Railking IMPERIAL set. I thought it would be fun to have 2sets, 1 engines at each end 6 cars in between run it as a lash up on dcs go both directions and it wouldn't have to turn around.
The set is a great deal. |

The real train doesn't turn around. The engine runs on the south end and they run north from a control cab in the car on the other end. |

No. The only two RailKing Imperial ready to run sets included the SD70ACe diesel engine. One was CSX and the other was Union Pacific. Bill Pennsy....The Standard Railroad Of The World - Then, Now, & Forever!!!!! |

One of our members has the Railking set. The sound on the locomotive is great -- so good I was actually thinking about flashing my Metrolink F59 with it (Metrolink runs along the same route as the Surfliner down to Oceanside.) The cars are short (15" roughly) and are actually Superliners painted with the Surfliner paint scheme and lettering (although some Amtrak Superliners are now painted that way minus the "Surfliner" lettering)
Although not scale-sized, the set looks good, especially with an extra car or two. It would be nice if they had made a cab car available, but with a couple of detail parts, a few LEDs, a DPDT slide switch and a little patience one of the cars could be converted to a cab car. Well, I went to Just Trains today and took the plunge. Nice set for $289! They even swapped out the Realtrax for Fastrack. Also picked up an MTH RK North Coast Brewing Co. Old No. 38 Stout Reefer to add to my growing beer car collection. Sincere thanks to all for the opinions and info. This forum rocks!

It looks like the F59 in the set is around 1 inch shorter than scale. Is that the only difference from scale? For some odd reason, the height and width are bigger on this Imperial version than on the Premier version.

AGHRMatt's assessment is right on the money.
Has anyone heard the soundfile? Are the station annoucements anywhere near accurate? Previously, all of the MTH F59PHI engines in Surfliner livery (I believe their are two seperate product numbers) use a soundfile with station annoucemnets for Amtraks Capital Corridor route not the Pacific Surfliner route? |

It has the correct sound file now and the PFA's match stations on the route. AGHR member Mike McClone re-flashed almost three dozen locomotives at Arnie's Trains in Westminster with the correct sound set that was released after the first sets shipped. The sets sold out quickly in Southern California. It was our first choice for the train set give-away but we couldn't get one quickly. Matt Jackson A.I.M. I have the Metrolink engine after getting it on a order that I had placed before I found the K-Line engine. The detail is not quite up to the K-Line but still very good. It is a bit smaller with the sounds being all local SoCal stations and the performance is quite good. I only really notice the size difference when the MTH is parked right next to the K-Line unit. This one engine got my attention enough to look at more MTH items in the future.
Now if I only had DCS to play with all the stuff. Oh, the station stop sequence, even through conventional control, is great! I know that I have been having too much fun with my Lionel trains when I see real life railroad tracks and wonder why the middle rail is missing. |

If I'm reading it right, the catalog shows the engine is equipped with a smoke unit .. is this a correct ??
|
||||
|
Yes, it has smoke.

The MTH website now shows the price as $369.95 .... even a better bargain. I'm thinking this set would be a great runner and attention grabber at train shows.

I agree. I would suggest using the station sounds sequence often and no one would be disappointed. I know that I have been having too much fun with my Lionel trains when I see real life railroad tracks and wonder why the middle rail is missing. |

I've used the Budweiser Set 2-8-0 controlled by the MTH DCS Commander to operate the numerous Proto 2 sounds & functions available on the steam engine on the one dedicated line, and this has brought a ton of smiles. The Amtrak Surfliner Passenger set would be the icing on the cake with all its passenger station Proto-effects. OKC |
