Nuts, I own stock and wanted more....oh well.

I guess I have to start saving my pennies and buy some Berkshire Hathaway Stock.
yeah... right. It will probably result in other train stocks going up.

when berkshire bought dairy queen the dairy queen shareholders could opt for the A shares or B shares. The B shares are also going to split 50 for 1 which will put them below Burlington's current share price, so you should come out ahead in the deal. CSX is still cheap (45 or so as is GATX (GMT)).

One thing I could never figure out was, how does Union Pacific feel about this, seeing that their HQ is right there in Omaha.....slighted maybe? I do agree that BNSF runs a better railway.

I've been on the Isle of Denial too long. BNSF might really exist if Warren Buffet wants to buy it. NAH! Smile

You gotta be rich to own any berkshire hathaway "A" shares: try north of $100,000 a share! If you have any BNSF stock, it was up $25 today Smile

I posted this on the other thread. The deal includes a 50 for 1 split on Berkshire Hathaway class B stock. That would take the price from approx $3200 a share to $65 a share. I think it's a clear buying opportunity for those of us who don't have a spare 100,000 or so.

I saw on CNN that Buffet is going to change all of the motive power to Berkshire's. This explains his investments in the coal industry.

Well since he already owns a big chunk of the Norfolk Southern and the U P maybe he's trying to take over all rail traffic in the U S. NPR was talking about it tonight and was guessing that Buffet doesn't think the current administration will do anything about the coal industry, since that's a major portion of what's hauled by train these days.

You have to admire the guy (Warren Buffet). CBS, Sixty Minutes did a piece on/with him a few years back concerning capitol gains tax and the fact that he paid less tax (percentage) than most of his employees. He appeared very likable and with the best interest of the country in mind. It was refreshing.

I hope this works well for him and all of us.

Warren's reasoning follows NS' expansion of its Philadelphia Navy Yard operations. By the year 2035, NS expects to do 500% more North-South shipping. And this will be at the expense of the trucking industry. CSX has been carrying the same message in its TV ads for the past year. Actually, if you wanted to make long term stock investments, the railroads wouldn't be a bad bet.

Remember, NS just showed their first battery operated engine. And unlike some 1950's F units, it doesn't use EveReady batteries which leak into the compartment!

When my dad died in 85, I was advised by friends to sell what train stock he had. So I did. BIG MISTAKE!

Okay, I'm only saying this for the benefit of the posters, so please don't grill me for it!

This topic should go in the real trains section. I've noticed the trend of the 3-rail trains section being the "go to" section of sorts, and because of that it tends to get a little crowded. I can recall the "This looks cold!" thread as well in this case. Just an FYI is all. Smile

With current US leadership determined to shut down the coal industry and the country catching on the the farce that is ethanol I can only imagine that Buffet's long term vision of American railroads is container shipping; largely from the Orient. So train fans can celebrate this successful investor's faith in railroads, but I'm not sure those in the manufacturing sector can be so sanguine.

From one of the news stories on the deal:

By betting on BNSF, Buffett -- the world's second-richest person and a long-time model train buff -- renewed interest in a storied, but highly cyclical American industry that has tried to reinvent itself by emphasizing its ability to move goods cheaply and efficiently.

Warren is a long-time model railroad buff! How many knew that?

(An interesting model railroad connection. Check it out, NickyBoy. Wink)

I have relatively few shares in BNSF, but is signficant to me, looks like 65.00 is a good deal and I know where some of my expendible income will be going.

I like betting on our future Smile

I agree but stuff gets posted here because there are far more eyes looking at this part of the forum than anywhere else. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be in real trains, however.

That is the EXACT reason why the 3-rail thread is the go-to one. Just noticed the trend is all.

I was thinking the same thing. While moving in a different direction appears to be a good politically, hard core (coal) energy still drives the economy, I have yet to visuallize this country being powered by a wind mill Eek And that's after a weekend in Somerset County PA where there is a ton of them.

It well may have been a statement to those (young inexperienced) in charge Wink

You guys have it all wrong. Ross Rowland has been trying to get either Buffet or Gates to buy #614 for the longest. Now Warren will have a layout for that puppy and someplace to let it run. Wink
