Good morning everyone,
This maybe in the wrong category. This probably needs to be addressed in DCS. Can anyone tell me what wall transformer (model # and volt/ watt) from Radio shack is used to power their TIU in the Aux. port. I saw it up months ago up, but did a search with no avail. Also any Price idea would be also much appreciated. Just ordered a DCS system want to get max potential out of it. Jim from Jim's Train Shop, thank you again.

Thanks,

Chris

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I plugged the adapter wire into the 14volt port on the back of the Z4000.
I've not had a problem, yet.

I believe the adapter gets plugged in to the TIU.

I may have misspoke.
I power the TIU using the 14volt output on the rear of the Z4000 with an adapter wire plugged into the TIU.
It has circuit protection.

Joe,
Nothing wrong with that! Just don't load the circuit with much of anything else, or you will trip the breaker. The 14v and 10v acc circuits can not take a heavy draw of current. If the breaker pops, you shut down the TIU and loose control. But the trains keep moving, not a good thing! Frown

The problem with powering the TIU into the AUX IN from the Z4K is that if you have a derailment and it pops the breaker on the Z4K you have no control then of the TIU to stop other trains etc.

Paul,
In the case of a derailment and subsequent short, I think only the breaker on the handle trips, not the 14v or 10v breakers. That being the case, control will be maintained elsewhere. If the 14v breaker pops then he has a problem.

To avoid any probleM I'd use a different power supply. I use a Z-500 brick which you can pick up very cheaply and they have the plug already on it.

Thanks Chris, I never really thought about it happening.
In all the years I've had it connected the breaker has not popped once.
MY only concern up till now has been if 14 volts into the TIU restricts DCS signal output.
I have had some, not many problems in that area..

Joe,
A 14v power supply will not reduce the TIU signal output. The TIU is designed to run on 12 to 22v ac or dc, so this is not a problem. (I run my TIU on a 12v wall wort.) What you should do, is run the track voltage at 18v minimum. Anecdotal evidence suggests that lower voltages here may in deed affect the return signal of the engine to the TIU. Others may wish to chime in...

Thanks, I kinda figured it wouldn't make a difference...
After asking so many questions I finally threw in the towel and downloaded the DCS book.

Just wanted to give a heads up to everybody looking for the Radio Shack 276-1690: it doesn't exist anymore. It's been replaced by P/N 273-331, no Radio Shack name on it- the trademark name is Enercell. Same 18/24VAC 1 amp output. No free adaptaplug either,if you buy online. the Adaptaplug costs $6.99(plus tax). The adapter costs $25.29, and is available online, or ship to store, or at the local store(if in stock). the Adaptaplug is still free if you get the supply in store.
I use a 16VAC 40W wall wart I got from Ebay. They are made for security systems, so have screw terminals instead of wire can be had for 15$ + shipping.. A couple of feet of 22 ga. speaker wire, a size M coax plug(274-1569 $2.99 for 2) and i'm running my TIU. 16 vac transformers with a 6 ft. cord and the correct plug are available from Jameco.com for $10.95 + shipping, for those who want a commercial product.

Personally, Radio Shack is the port of last resort. Their prices are very high, and they may or may not have what you need in stock.

Hope this helps---

I just bought a 273-1691 at Radio Shack for $27.99 and got a free M adapter 2 days ago here in Massachusetts. It's an AC to Dc 15 volt adapter that seems to work fine.

ED, if you do a search for 273-1691 on the Radio Shack website, it says it doesn't exist. The new number is 273-332. If you don't go to the store to buy the supply, the adaptaplug isn't free. I've got to edit my previous post to remove the erronious information.

I tried one of the Radio shack 18/24 units and it did not work. The red indicator light on the TIU would not come on. I don't know the number of the unit because I took it back and got the 273-1691. The Z750 brick worked fine but I want to use the brick elsewhere.

Update:

I bought 273-1690 at the local Radioshack. It was the last they had. You guys are correct, they are no longer being made and the 273-331 is the replacement. There are still some 273-1690 available out there according to the sales clerk. He advised to call around to find them. I guess grab them while you can. 273-331 is alittle over $10 more than 273-1690. Thanks again everyone.

Here's what you want:

16 VAC wall transformer

It will cost you all of $5.75 each. Just call All Electronics and you will have them within 7 business days. This is what I am using to power my TIUs.

I am using the old Lionel brick from their two piece 40 watt unit (before the CW 80 days). Works great!

If you have an extra tranformer with a good circuit breaker, Radio shack has an M adapter(273-344 $6.99)and an Adaptaplug(273-350 $3.69)that has 2 wires coming out. The wires can be connected to the transformer on one end of the Adaptaplug and the M connector to the other. The M plug goes in to the TIU and the transformer will provide auxillary power.
