Hi,

I picked up a small collection of postwar the other day. There is a Lionel 3520 Searchlight that has an unusual hole in the deck. I've been handling Lionel for a long time and never seen anything like this. The hole is on the end with the brake stand (opposite side to the searchlight), about 1/2 inch in from the depressed center. Looking from underneath, it is in the middle of a casting mark. It is perfectly round and does not appear to have been drilled out post production. Has anyone seen a car like this before?

This base was probably used in another specialty car and Lionel just used it again for this Searchlight car assuming everyone would accept it. But you caught them at it!

.

......LF, it could be a leftover from an old Lionel "Electronic" set. That was a short lived idea Lionel had to remotely control cars.

Don't think so, Lionel didn't take any steps towards putting a receiver in a searchlight car. In fact, by the time searchlight cars came out, the electronic set was a dead duck.
