A gentleman in my area is selling his collection. He paid $3141 for everything. He bought it all within the past 3 years. Most engines are MTH. The ones with an * are protosound. I do not have any other information (boxes, numbers). I did get some pictures and everything looks clean and well taken care of. They asked me to make them an offer. I was thinking about $2000 but I did not want to insult them nor do I want to pay too much. I will use most of this but will probably get rid of the track and some engines. Here is the list: http://www.smuggsbbs.com/Files/trainslist.pdf
Any thoughts on the price?

You should be able to look up the MSRP on most of this stuff (cars you might need more details). Mabye offer 30-40% of MSRP for the PS1 engines and 50% of MSRP for everything else?

I would get the manufacturer and part number for each item and then search ebay to see what they are going for. I would estimate no more than $0.50 on the dollar.
Why not post the pics? Can't tell much from the words. If the MTH is premiere(which I seriously doubt), then $2K would be ok. Otherwise 50% of what he paid should be your limit. Just my 2 cents worth.

In all likelihood his $3100 was bought 'one piece at a time' and he's asking you to buy everything from him as a single purchase. Consider that you probably would not have bought many of the pieces in the first place (and as you say you will have to sell) so half would be the MOST I would consider. Just my opinion too.

Exactly, he is asking you to buy all HIS choices, not yours. My number was based on 33%
Judging from the picture, i'd have to agree with the majority: no more than 1500$, and possibly less-- there are no expensive, rare items that I can see. The most expensive individual item is the Z4000.

He may have paid that much for the trains when they was new, but none of it is worth near that much in used condition. People who sell off their modern trains need to realize that they aren't worth what they paid for them.

Boy, 30-40 percent off of list seems awfully generous for buying a large quantity of used trains. The photo shows that at a minimum, the trains are quite dusty. Assuming there are no hot (as in desireable) items, and you were cherry-picking just the pieces you wanted, I'd might say 75 percent of the original street price. For the whole lot, I'd say more like 50 percent of the original street price.

PJ, from the looks of your photo it appears that these items are semi scale / Railking.
Well most of it is...
that Conrail Gp38 is a proto1 [if it has sound] and it's a premier. I have it.
the B&M Geep appears to be a Williams.
the Libby's reefer is a premier as I see separate grabrails plus the airline next to the coupler.
That NYC woodside is either a premier model or a scale model of some sort. too detailed for Railking.[ just look at the end ladders]
and of course there is the atlas O switch tower and the K-line Quikcrete flatbet truck. [that could sell well on da bay as it's a fairly recent production judging by the COE international and the wheel style.]
PJ Mullin Good Morning, First thing you should do is ask yourself do you really want these trains. You stated you would use most of the them, however, there would be items you would have to resale. Maybe you should walk away from this deal. I suggest you put your money towards new trains. By purchasing new trains, you would be getting trains with the latest updated electronics and they would be trains that you really wanted. Also, by buying new trains you eliminate the problem of reselling the items you don't want.
Take a little time and think about this transaction. The decision is all yours. Good luck. Jim Sutter

PJ I would suggest you hold onto you cash. I saw a few things I might snap for but the rest he could pedal on the Bay and get rid of if he is serious...

Those trains are all used and there is nothing rare there. They are just garden variety trains and not very valuable ones at that. My bid would be $400 and they'd have to include the table!
