I received the MTH GP-9 from Sean Today. Great looking Black Widow paint job (sorry bloody nose guys, Like the widow as well) I placed it on the track and it was found quickly then I hit the start up button. The sound kicked right in and it sounded great a little different then the last GP-9 I got. This seemed a bit deeper, I then sounded the horn, and WWWHHHHHOOOOOOOOHHHH it has a real deep billowing sound like no other MTH horn I have heard. It also has the Crossing signal in it. The Rev sound is also awesome. Has anyone else got one lately with this sound package? I am very happy with this railking geep.
Kudos MTH Big Grin

Good. Bring it down to the club Sunday (Young Marines are having their graduation Saturday and there won't be any parking near the building.)

John, my sentiments exactly. Fired up my new Black Widow GP9 last night to put it into DCS system, and was very pleasantly surprised with new, particularly the deeper tones. Rick

Hi John! I am very envious of you and your new sound sets in your new MTH engine! MTH made a promise to us of up-gradeability to their DCS-Proto 2 system and with that in mind the new and improved sound sets should be made available to us to upload into older 5 volt board PS2 engines! I have many older MTH F units, E units, GP30, GP38, GP40, and SD40-2 engines that have horrible tinny motor sounds and some with the same horrible high pitched horn that literally hurts my ears when I blow it that are in diar need of some of the latest greatest sound sets that MTH has to offer! Please, please, MTH, would you please update the sound files on the older releases of PS2 engines! Roll Eyes

Yes, MTH did a very good job with the GP-9 soundset! And ditto for the last few. Looks like their Bose guy is doing a good job!

John, I must have one of the early proto 2 GP9's. It's the ACL model without dynamic brake blister. The horn is a single tone air horn. It has a clear sounding bell and some freight yard sounds in PFA. Sounds different than the one you have. They must have made some improvements. Ray

Yes Ray, It is a improvement in sound. I will bring it to the club next weekend if you like to hear it. I think Matt has a way to download the sound files however I think this one may have a different speaker, come on down and we will pop the hood to see whats under it. Bring yours down to compare.

I've got a new set of MTH B&M GP9s, and they are some of the best sounding locos on my pike. I'm very happy with them.

Great job, MTH.

Thanks John, Chuck Sartor sent me the file, I 'll play with it tomorrow and see if I can notice a difference with the regular speaker.I think the recent upgrade board in the engine is 16 bit but don't really know for sure.

Thx Chuck , John, & Matt, I know Matt would send the file if asked,, Over & out.

John,

As I have not been able to get to AGHRS in a while, and was even forced to miss TCA yesterday, please send me your new GP9 for me to test run. I promise not to keep it for more than a few years.

(attempting to set a new standard in gaul, what do you think?)

Enjoy your new engine, I hope to see you guys again sometime soon.

Hi all,

Gregg or Chuck, could either of you please send me a copy of the sound file. I'm doing some testing with the DCS Loader software today and I'd like to try loading it into a couple different engines.

Several of MTH's newer diesels have much improved sound files. I noticed the added bass frequencies in the SW-1. The speaker in the SW-1 is very small and the volume level is quite low, but the frequency response is excellent. In the last issue of OGR the reviewer (IIRC, George Brown) of the SW-1 referred to the sounds as generic MTH. I couldn't disagree more. However, I suspect that because the volume is low on the SW-1 and some ears are older than others, the reviewer missed the new sounds. Hopefully, the improved sounds are more noticeable on a model like the GP-9 with a larger speaker.

I tried loading the new soundset in a GP from the last run before this one. A slight improvement, but the key to the bassier sounds looks to be MTH has a new deeper cone speaker that can reproduce the bass better, There is also baffles around the speaker. Maybe Midge can come up with this new speaker and baffling rubber.

Thanks chuck, I couldn't download the file, not enough flash memory or something. Oh well,I wonder how we're going to know which engines have the larger memory board without taking it apart? Bummer!

John,

Thanks for the tip. I have a NYC GP-9 from the 2007 set and it did not have the new sound file. Downloaded from MTH and loaded in. Now I have the crossing signal which I did not have before and what seems to be a better sound set.

I'm trying to grab the file now. I'll download it into my CNW SD9 since it has a 3-volt board to see what it sounds like. Too bad they don't have updated sound files for the old 5-volt boards.

Does this sound file have an X2 suffix which requires a 3V board with extended memory?

Just checked. The file isn't available on the web site yet. We'll have to mug John so we can grab the locomotive and pull the sound file.

How do you know if MTH has released an upgraded sound set? For instance,
is the file offered for the 20-2491-1 (GP38-2) different than the one
loaded in the engine?
