Gary - Which version do you have coming?.... The Mrs. has been on the phone - trying to hide while she is doing it - to find me one I assume for Christmas.....

I remember when we were first together over hearing her talking to a retailer some where trying to find me a set of "NO" hoppers in Erie.... it was a hoot...

She bought some stuff from Randy Peppcock at Downtown Deco and they had quite a "thing" going on.....

Just visited with the owner of B and F Hobbies in Wakefield, Rhode Island searching for an L-3c. He advised he didn't have an L-3c but I believe he has some L-4as, L-4bs and L-3as left. He was an interesting guy to talk with and knows his locomotives.

Frank didn't have the L-3c but promised to contact me if he was able to find one. Frank says he likes the face of the L-3s better than the L-4s. He was, however, able to sell me a DCS system.

Just returned from visiting my local hobby shop, Berwyn's Toy Trains & Models in Berwyn IL (708) 484-4384. They where just putting some of their new MTH Mohawk models out on the shelves: L4a, L3a and the L4a plus 6-car freight set (20-3377-1). I was surprised that they had them discounted too!

Sure is a beautiful model. Now I'm waiting for MTH to offer the NYC "Super Mohawk" L4b with roller bearing rods! NYC had only two locomotives in this configuration #3144 and #3148. Send those cards & letters to MTH on this project, for next year.

I still say the eccentric's off but it's an easy fix. It's not totally unusual to have them out of position out of the box.

Check 2:19 to 2:21 in the MTH Youtube:

Well, you're the expert Norm, but I think MTH got the eccentric crank in the correct position:

Perhaps Rich would be so kind as to post another photo of the engineer's side, with rods all the way down? Something looks off to me, that's all. It looks different from what I'm seeing in the video.

I watched the video. The eccentric sure looks fine to me and the motion of the valve gear and eccentric rod are all prototypicle.

^ That's what I said. ^ Maybe it's just the angle of Rich's photo. A 90 degree shot of the engineer's side with the rods all the way down would satisfy my curiosity.

Unpacked mine today. Have yet to run it. I must say it's the best detailed MTH engine to date. Very nice.

Ok, ran mine and no issues. Can't believe it, as this is the first engine I have ever had run right out of the box with no mechanical/electrical defects. That's including all the importers.

One minor thing was the running board came off trying to install the ear on the right side. A plastic piece mated to a brass plate which is glued onto the diecast lip. You can see it in Rich's photo. This is the second engine from MTH that a glued on piece has come loose. MTH should find a better glue. But that's minor as I re-glued it.

Tomorrow I lube, install tender piping, fill up the smoke unit and take some pics for you guys.

I've already swapped out the 40mm wireless drawbar and installed 35mm drawbar. Just enough space to run on 0-72 curves. Much shorter gap between engine and tender.

Gary

Rich - You should share with us how you did the weathering - others might, some day, get the guts to do the same thing.....

I'll be illustrating the technique I used to do this engine step by step in my next video. I'm working on it right now and hope to be done and released by xmas Roll Eyes. It is actually very easy and inexpensive (no air brush) and took me about 1 hour to do this. Its basically weathering dyes (rust and grimy black) and black chalk. It does not need an overcoat or sealer and can still be handled without it coming off. Although it can be removed, it would take much longer than it took to put it on. I was really surprised how easy it was and how good it looks. You can use it on diesels and rolling stock as well. I do use the air brush also, mostly for rolling stock, and show that in the DVD as well.
I didn't think I would have the guts either, but that changed fast after I did the first engine. I did four engines today, the mohawk, the 3rd rail 2-10-4 and two NS diesels, and didn't even think twice about it. Thats over 3Gs of engines.

Rich.

Thanks Rich - I suppose if I do one I will get more comfortable with the idea - I will have to pick a victim.... er.... volunteer to start with.... We have 2 of the Weaver NKP Hudsons so maybe do one of those to start.....

Looking forward to your next video - I keep the one we have now loaded in case I am closed to getting caught watching something off limits - I can switch DVD players in like seconds!

Any 3 railer running this MTH Mohawk with the SCALE wheels?

If so, what track are you running, and what switches? Any problems?
