quote: Both locomotives were beautiful (but then I'm a sucker for Big Steam anyway!), and interestingly did not come with classification lights. I looked carefully at both of Al Staufer's NYC motive power books when I got home, but could find no classification lights on any L-3 or L-4 Mohawks...or if they were there, I could not see them in multiple photographs I examined. Interesting...I would have thought these were safety issues mandated by the Federal Government.
Class lights were not required on the New York Central Main Line after 1938. So, while in main line service, these locomotives, like the J3a Hudsons, would have been "classless." You may find photos of these locomotive, later in their careers, on secondary lines with added class lights.

First, class lights on the front of steam locomotives, or diesels for that mater, where NOT required by the ICC (now the FRA), and had nothing to do with safety. The class lights where only to indicate "second section following" - green, or "extra" - white, or "rear of engine" - red, i.e. backing up at night.
When some NYC locomotives where assigned to the Mich. Central or Big Four, class lights where added. Thus you can tell by looking at the front of Hudsons, Mohawks, etc. where they where assigned from year to year. I have seen photos of the same locomotive number, taken years apart and one shot has class lights and the other one does not.

Yes I do Does Toytrain1 ever post anymore? Forgot all about that guy. Anyway the video shows the one I have on order. Great looking engine which would look even better if MTH had gone the extra mile and had roller bearing side rods instead of the friction ones shown. A minor detail

I miss Dave. I don't know why he doesn't post anymore and I never run into him at trains shows either but at least he is still in the hobby. I always enjoyed his videos. He's a good guy. Nice Mohawk too.

Got mine from EngineHouseHobbies today. Hey Rick, heard you were there, sorry I missed you. I planned on going on Saturday, but couldn't make it. Pretty much the usual: - Runs smooth down to 2 mph which is not typical, usually 3 is lowest. - Heavy smoke - The whistle sounds great and is very unique for the freight version. can't do the quill yet, haven't done 4.1 yet - Impressed with the extra piping on the bottom sides of the tender. They don't come installed because they you need min O-72 to keep the trucks from swinging into them. Here are some photos. Enjoy! Rich www.toytrainsontracks.com

Rich, Looks great! I can't wait to pick mine up this week after I get paid. quote: Note from a 2-railer: You folks have crossed a line somewhere here. Looks like a scale model on a scale railroad with tinplate track. And even the track looks darn good, considering. Bob2, that is what weathered Scaletrax can do! Rich, I see you have done quite a bit of weathering on the layout. Even your Lionel bridges in the background. You're hooked now! P.S. you need to raise your deck plate between the tender & engine, it's a long fall for the crew.

Not too bad for diecast. The air reservoirs and other appliances hide the boiler shape a bit beneath the walkways. Is that engineer side eccentric 90 degrees out?? I may look for one of these used a year or two from now.

Trainut, Mine is 20-3374-1 L-3c which is the older freight version. As I understand, the whistle is different than the passenger version. I did not know this, but like it. I actually changed my order from the new version L-4 with the flat face because I liked this one better, and wanted to save myself some money by not needing a NYC passenger set. Al, I knew you'd be the one to notice! The track and bridges are all weathered, as well as some buildings and trains. Did you see these weathered engines? I just notice I missed a spot on the track. Didn't do as good a job on that track in the back as I did on the front on the new extension. I didn't photograph there because I didn't want to give it away yet. On that track I even added some accents with dyes and chalks. I'm definetly hooked. B.T.W. I was wondering where my crew went?? Rick, Thanks, we need to hook up again, I'm thinking of hosting again in Jan/Feb. Rich.

No, the eccentric crank on the engineer's side is oriented correctly.

Norm, One of these baby's is hankering for a weathering.
