Contrary to rumors all models of the Mohawk with have ears included. Official word from MTH is they are on the water. Anyone know how long it takes MTH to test run each engine?

Thanks for the update, Gary. That clarifies some issues with the photos on the previous Mohawk post where they showed the L3b with smoke deflectors and the catalog says the L3c and L4b come with smoke deflectors. I believe addition of the smoke deflectors makes the locomotives with front pump covers/modernization plates more aesthetically pleasing.

I saw the L3b and the L4a. They looked good and sounded even better. Not as fine as the 3rd Rail L3b, but you will be pleased. Must stronger steam loco sounds are being used now.

Yeah nothing beats a 3rdrail engine. I came close to getting the 3rdrail L3b but really wanted the L4b which I'm getting now from MTH. I really need to stop putz-ing around and get DCS hooked up Eek Then I'll be ready for this nice engine.

The two Mohawks I saw at EngineHouse Hobbies on Saturday had smoke deflectors in the box, which you can elect to install if desired. There is also additional piping to be installed on the tender if you have a minimum operating radius of 72" or greater.

The two Mohawks I saw also had different sound packages. One (L-3a) is passenger station sounds; the other depicts a scenario with the locomotive setting up for NYC photographer Ed Nowak to shoot his famous color and b&w images of a Mohawk (with smoke deflectors) pulling 25 or so Pacemaker box cars through Breakneck Tunnel along the Hudson River in the spring of 1946. This latter Mohawk is the one that comes with the five Pacemaker box cars and caboose in the MTH "set." Its whistle is considerably higher pitched than is the one that comes with the passenger train sound package.

Both locomotives were beautiful (but then I'm a sucker for Big Steam anyway!), and interestingly did not come with classification lights. I looked carefully at both of Al Staufer's NYC motive power books when I got home, but could find no classification lights on any L-3 or L-4 Mohawks...or if they were there, I could not see them in multiple photographs I examined. Interesting...I would have thought these were safety issues mandated by the Federal Government.

Perhaps Brian Scace or another NYC subject matter expert would care to enlighten me re classification lights on Mohawks.

Class lights were not required on the New York Central Main Line after 1938. So, while in main line service, these locomotives, like the J3a Hudsons, would have been "classless." You may find photos of these locomotive, later in their careers, on secondary lines with added class lights.

First, class lights on the front of steam locomotives, or diesels for that mater, where NOT required by the ICC (now the FRA), and had nothing to do with safety. The class lights where only to indicate "second section following" - green, or "extra" - white, or "rear of engine" - red, i.e. backing up at night.

When some NYC locomotives where assigned to the Mich. Central or Big Four, class lights where added. Thus you can tell by looking at the front of Hudsons, Mohawks, etc. where they where assigned from year to year. I have seen photos of the same locomotive number, taken years apart and one shot has class lights and the other one does not.

Does Toytrain1 ever post anymore? Forgot all about that guy. Anyway the video shows the one I have on order. Great looking engine which would look even better if MTH had gone the extra mile and had roller bearing side rods instead of the friction ones shown. A minor detail

Is the whistle supposed to quill? I have SPW on the DCS screen, but when I push it, it says 'check track'.

Chuck, I heard the whistle "quill" on both Mohawks at Engine House Hobbies on Saturday. But you have to have DCS 4.1 in your TIU and remotes for it to work. I don't (yet) so I can't.

Thanks for confirming Rick. I am running 4.1. I wonder if the sound file is bad.
Neither the box or instructions say anything about a quilling whistle, but the SPW appears on the DCS screen.

Got mine from EngineHouseHobbies today. Hey Rick, heard you were there, sorry I missed you. I planned on going on Saturday, but couldn't make it.

Pretty much the usual:
- Runs smooth down to 2 mph which is not typical, usually 3 is lowest.
- Heavy smoke
- The whistle sounds great and is very unique for the freight version. can't do the quill yet, haven't done 4.1 yet
- Impressed with the extra piping on the bottom sides of the tender. They don't come installed because they you need min O-72 to keep the trucks from swinging into them.

Here are some photos.

Enjoy!

Rich, as usual, great visuals...and that piping really "pops the scene" as Malcom Furlow used to say. Haven't even gotten mine out of the box yet, though Ron did demo it for me.

Layout also looks great...again...as usual! Rick

Bob2, that is what weathered Scaletrax can do!

Rich, I see you have done quite a bit of weathering on the layout. Even your Lionel bridges in the background. You're hooked now! Wink Big Grin

P.S. you need to raise your deck plate between the tender & engine, it's a long fall for the crew. Razz

Not too bad for diecast. The air reservoirs and other appliances hide the boiler shape a bit beneath the walkways.

Is that engineer side eccentric 90 degrees out??

I may look for one of these used a year or two from now.

Trainut,

Mine is 20-3374-1 L-3c which is the older freight version. As I understand, the whistle is different than the passenger version. I did not know this, but like it. I actually changed my order from the new version L-4 with the flat face because I liked this one better, and wanted to save myself some money by not needing a NYC passenger set. Roll Eyes

Al,

I knew you'd be the one to notice! The track and bridges are all weathered, as well as some buildings and trains. Did you see these weathered engines?
I just notice I missed a spot on the track. Didn't do as good a job on that track in the back as I did on the front on the new extension. I didn't photograph there because I didn't want to give it away yet. On that track I even added some accents with dyes and chalks.
I'm definetly hooked. B.T.W. I was wondering where my crew went?? Big Grin

Rick,
Thanks, we need to hook up again, I'm thinking of hosting again in Jan/Feb.

Absolutley beautiful! This forum has to be the best advertisement for products! Once I saw this, I think now I want one! Thanks to all of you that have pics on here of new models. Where I live, there is not a decent hobby shop within 200 miles. You have to rely on this forum to get a good look a product. Especially if there are five versions. With the exception of Jim Sutter, who is always helpful, if you call some of the other mail order retailers they will not take the time to describe a model, or God forbid look in a box! How else does someone review a model before purchase if you have to drive 200 miles! I will be waiting for pics of the L-4. Thanks Rich!

The Engineer's side eccentric crank looks fine to me; between 9 and 12.5 degrees forward when the main crank pin is at bottom center. Plus, when the locomotive is stopped with the eccentric rod lined up exactly parallel with the main rod, you can grease every rod bearing ON BOTH SIDES!
