Greenburg's just announced a show at the infamous Greater Phila Expo Center in Oaks on 8/15 and 8/16. Anyone going or is the general opinion it will be a repeat of the Worlds' Greatest Hobby show disaster of January (traffic wise)?

They're in Edison N.J. on 8/8 and 8/9 so I doubt if I'll make the trip down to Philly the following week.

They made a few changes to the traffic patterns which has helped. I doubt if they will get the number of people they got at the WGH show.

Unfortunately Greenberg got bounced from the main exhibit hall to the smaller hall and lost 13K square feet of exhibit space. Some demo and modular groups either had to downsize or were eliminated altogether.

The larger exhibit hall was actually sold twice, once to Greenberg and also to a horse show. The horse show won out. I can't imagine what kind of horse show you could hold there.

Should be interesting.

I'll do Edison, thank you very much. However, since Greenburg doesn't do tons of TV advertising I don't think the PHilly show will attract the crowed we endured in January.

No way will I ever again be sucked into another day of aggravation trying to get into that place. Mad

But if you must go and believe me I can't see what would be that critical of a driving force, then go early in the day, like be at the doors at eight AM.
The roads in and out of the place are totaly inadequate to handel the traffic to anything but the smallest event.

Besides, that Expo Center is no place near Philadelphia, about fifty miles from West Philly. It should be called the Greater King of Prussia Expo Center.
Come to think of it Philadelphia is ludicrously protective of it's image, try to produce a SEPTA car, or police or Fire department product with the Philly logo on it and see how much trouble and expense your put through. You would think the city solicitor's office would be on these people for having such a negative effect on that image they hold so precious. Oh well, who knows what pocket got stuffed on that one. Wink

In any case if I'm wrong let us know, but I doubt it. Roll Eyes

I think I might wait a round to see what traffic reports are like for this more "nominally sized" event before trying to get in there the next time.

What, are you guys nuts? There's no way I would go near that place with a horse show happening at the same time. The ONLY way I would venture near there would be if the ONLY show there was Greenberg's. Then we could almost be certain to get there in the same day.

If you want to travel to see trains that Saturday, you would probably be better served by hitting Nicholas Smith in Broomall, PA and Just Trains in Newark, DE. They're about a half-an-hour apart via I95. You would probably still spend less time on the road and have more fun doing it!

Hi Fred, that is exactly what happened to me and my family driving out to the Worlds Greatest Hobby show that was held at that hell hole. Mad

We ended up at Nicholas Smith and spent our train money there. Cool

Should of done that in the first place!

By supersonic jet they're a half-hour apart! Big Grin To those of us driving it's more like an hour and a half. Wink

I only post so someone doesn't read and mistakenly think they are that close. Smile

Actually they are 45 min apart if you take 476 to 95 from midnight to 6 am. Any other time you hit the 95 / 295 merge and you sit for another 25-30 minutes. Smile Oh well it is still worth the trip as compared to the WGH Traffic fiasco. Oh and you are right about the horse show. Chester County is an Equestrian Mecca! Between Radnor Hunt club and the Devon Horse Show and all of the farms you will be lucky to get near the Greenberg show.

Might be closer to 45-50 minutes depending on how low you are flying. Big Grin

These are the Mapquest directions from NS to JT -does show driving time as 45 minutes between stores: Train Day!

Seriously though, without traffic, I can get from my front door, across the Betsy Ross Bridge, and to AI duPont in Wilmington, DE in about 45 minutes. I know because I've had to make this trip way too many times the past 5 years.

That really shouldn't be too bad during the Summer on a Saturday morning. Most folks will probably already be at their vacation destination by 10am. You can always take 95 down and cross over to Route 2 (Kirkwood Highway) and take it right into Newark. It might take a little longer with the traffic lights, but at least you'll be moving most of the time. Big Grin

I agree with GG1 man and Fred. I will never go to that place again after the debacle in January and especially with a another show going on there simultaneously.

We appreciate people's concern about parking and traffic leading to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center. However significant improvements have been made to traffic control since the World's Greatest Hobby on Tour show in January, including the Expo Center retaining parking control staffers and an additional entrance road from the Route 422 exit which bypasses the town of Oaks entirely. As for the horse show, it is true that there will be a horse show in a different part of the facility - however it is a trade only show and is not even open to the public. According to that show's website, just to register as a buyer you need to have proof of retail sales tax registration. The horse show will not be drawing large numbers of people and will not affect traffic or parking around the Expo Center to any significant degree.

We hope to see everyone at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in August - it's already sold out and promises to be quite a show!

I'm really torn here. I haven't attended a train show in years, since none have been held in the Philly area for quite some time. I avoided last year's debacle at Oaks after reading the negative experiences posted here on the first day.

Ideally, I would attend the Sunday session after reading the Saturday reports but I play softball on Sunday so that's out. If I go...it will have to be on Saturday.

Frank..thank you for your post addressing our concerns. I'm still on the fence but really wish to go. Well, I have a month to decide so I'll be following this thread closely to hear others' perspectives.

Folks,

There were over 42,000 who paid attendance at WGH.

That does not count children so you should at least double the number to 84,000.

Many more could not make through the traffic or heard about the traffic and decided to skip. Let's round the total to 100,000

If Greenbergs gets a total draw of 7,000 it is a BIG show.

So compare 7 to 100 when you think about the traffic.

Greenberg Shows

Hi Frank, I hope you are right about this and I'm all wet on this issue. I love train shows because there is nothing like them when a hobbyist is looking for a rare or special item. But this place, I don't know, it's so far out of the way.
Can't you find a place a little closer to Philadlephia? Roll Eyes

In any case I always wish the best for Greenberg Shows and truely wish you the best. But after that total mess in January (WGH) I'm going to have to sit this one out. In fact, I will have to hear about a number of successful events at that facility before I let my self get sucked out there again. Frown

If you miss the Greenberg show in Oaks.Pa., the Edison show is the weekend before Aug 8-9.

And Chuck-you can always say hello to me there-We will be running command control via TMCC and DCS and handing out information about the Ocean County Society of Model Railroaders-the club I am a member of.

And could be that Ernie will come with an unknown creation from his lab-you and I never know what he is cooking up in the basement!

Vacationing as I type in sunny Orlando, Florida.

That way, instead of sitting in traffic going TO the show, you can sit in traffic on the Southbound NJ turnpike going home FROM the show Big Grin.

Slow day on the internet so I make a comment on the horse show. One of the more expensive hobbies. I have a cousin and her daughter who have been involve with horses for the last forty years. These people are intently involved in there hobby and just as crazy as we are, maybe more so. I once had a conversation with my cousin about a $1,500 saddle that she got on sale for $800. My comment was you had to have a pretty nice _____, which she did, for a $1,500 saddle. Big Grin Smile I really couldn't top that with any train story. Roll Eyes

And the world moves on.

Does 295 extend North of the Trenton area? This is how I connect to the TP. When going home, the TP backs up between Edison and New Brunswick, and I have to get off and take 130 S to connect with 295. Your post sounds like 295 goes to Edison?

Glenn,
It's sunny for most of the day until the daily 10 minute rain. As for seeing the Mouse, closest we came to him was at Hollywood(MGM studios. No Magic kingdom this time. It ain't cheap for a family of four to do a 5 day hopper pass-costs close to $1200. OR equal to one Vision steamer!!!!

Stu,
We got down here early Sunday via taking the bird out of AC airport.

Talk when I get back.

NOT quite. 295 starts/ends at Route 1. Since I was a limo driver and traveled a LOT to the Princeton area with Time conscious clients, my best way to 295 is off of exit 8a NJT just before the NJT merge from 6 lanes each way to three. The ONLY TIME I take the NJ Turnpike farther than 8a is to get onto the PA turnpike extension.

IT takes me only 15 min from exit 8a to 295 S[except for rushour-30 min]

  • 8a to rte 32 forsgate drive
  • Forsgate Drive to route 130S[left lane Exit]
  • At exit 4 130 S, STAY STRAIGT onto Friendship road.[2 lane backwoods road that NO one uses but the locals]
  • Take Friendship road straight across until it T's off with Dey Road
  • Make RIGHT onto Dey road until lighted intersection with Scudders Mill Road.
  • take RIGHT onto Scudders Mill Road to Route 1 South
Route 1 south dumps into 295/95- Less traffic & no tolls. Wink

google map it if not sure of route! Big Grin
