Bob -

I made a small donation a month ago or so, but it seems that we've run into a lull in the donations. I just put a check in the mail tonight for the $206, so that should take care of set #11. This is a great thing you're doing. Hope we can get enough for one more set. I haven't been very active on the Forum in the last year or so, so this is a good way for me to contribute in another way.

Thank you for that. I think we can make set #12. I myself may also be able to donate more, but I'll have to see how the bills go.

ALSO WE NEED MORE AMBASSADORS. Since Justin Blair volunteered for 2 sets we are coverd by ambassadors for 11 sets. If we go to 12 sets or more we need a couple of new ambassador voulunteers; this is essential.

I have been thinking quite alot of a very hurting little kid, Michael Brewer, of Florida who last week was set afire by a group of boys and who now is in an induced coma and udergoing intensive treatment. I think that at this time, whether or not he will survive is still a main question. For those who know, severe burn injuries are one of the worst mightmares a person can suffer. This is a hurting little kid, and I would like to include him in this project.

If the idea seems to have merit, I will be ambassador to Michael and will use the $306 donated for a set as well as a few hundred dollars of my own to be used to buy him trains when he is better ( or for any other purpose his parents see fit to use it for ).

I think that we will finish buying set #12 and then if there are more donations set #13 will be for Michael.

NOTE TO ALL AMBASSADORS:

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU HAVE TO STATE WHO THE SET RECIPIENTS WILL BE BEFORE THE PRESENTATIONS. this gives donating members a chance to comment. I have requested that this be done on the other TFK "rolling" post.

DENNIS:

See item # 3.) in the original post to this topic.

This is nothing new, and we have done this everytime in the past. The idea is to put the potential recipient on the record for the donating members to know. Then we wait 2 days, and if there are no comments to resolve we go ahaed. I don't expect any problems in that the donating members have always gone along with the ambassador decisions.

Thanks,
Bob C.

You're right. I missed it. Since I was one of the first Ambassadors, several years ago, I planned to do it the same as then, which was, we reported on what we had done after we had made the presentation.

Point is, after I have done the work to find a recipient, I don't want someone hundreds of miles away to decide whether my choice is worthy or not.

I only volunteered this time because I thought I had a worthy recipient in mind. It doesn't seem wise to volunteer and then start looking all over knowing a train set is on the way.

Of course at any given time, worthy recipents will pop up, and the timing wasn't right. You hit a snag in getting acceptance, depending on where you were going to go with the set.

I am not totally confident that my choice is the best in the world right now either, so if someone has a better recipient in mind, let me know where to ship this set.

My choice is an 8 year old boy whose grandmother just won custody from her druggie daughter who has also been in and out of jail. The sister and husband of this grandmother also shares in the duties of caring for the boy, and has him on weekends. They clean houses for a living.

Got a better choice?

Sounds like a good cause to me. The little kid should get a real positive lift out of getting a TFK trainset. He could also use some stability. These are the types of kids we want to get to.

I looked into the case of the burned boy, Michael Brewer, and have found that there are several funds set up for him already. He is therefor being taken care of. We want to reach a child who isn't being taken care of, so I will withdraw my suggestion for Michael as a recipient of TFK. I will try to send a donation to him on my own and hope he pulls out of this thing.

NOTE TO AMBASSADORS:

Obtaining photos of the presentations is a key thing to do. Be sure that the photographed persons know that they will appear on the internet.

Where there is a problem with this, take pics as best you can. Perhaps showing recipients from behind, etc. may be the thing to doin these cases.

Bob, nice to see you around.

Here in Colombia people do not have a train culture (in fact we do not have trains at all) but with some folks we are "Colombianazing" your idea in order to give some joy to children here.

Do you still need an Ambassador for set 12? I need another set if it's available. As luck would have it I received an affirmative answer from The Brooklyn Children's Center after I committed my first set. The Brooklyn Children's Center (BCC) mission is to promote an environment for the development of healthy children and adolescents. If possible I would like to fulfill this need as well.

BTW, Has my last donation showed up yet?

Bob ( pennsyfan )

That is a nice idea. We could use more donations. I have no materials for a poster so you would have to make one up perhaps stating the nature of the TFK drive and maybe giving an example of one of the kids helped as is being reported on this topic. If I think of anything, I'll get in touch with you.

Bob - Are you donating a set to the center or to a child that's at the center? If it's for the center, I'd suggest not giving them an expansion pack, but instead using the money to get some extra track (maybe enough for a "twice around" setup) and a operating (but non-interactive) car or two... like an aquarium car or "chase" car.

I know when I (we) provided a set to an orphanage last year they wanted to keep it "fun but simple" (for both the kids and staff)... and they thought a UCS track & cars that required triggering (& had loose parts) might be more trouble than they're worth. We all agreed the extra track (including a crossing) and a few "neat cars to look at" was a good compromise between simplicity & play value.

Just food for thought.

Don,
Thanks for your input; the set would go to the center for their playroom. I have something else up my sleeve for the layout which I can't comment on as yet.

Bob C. Lets take Don's suggestion under advisement before that set gets shipped.
