Stunning engine...love the chrome finish. I just hope the body wasn't entirely chromed then painted over as that may lead to paint chipping if not prepped correctly.

One pantograph is bent where the rod holds the slider...bent a good bit. I know that if I try to bend it back it could stress the diecast metal. Can these be replaced easily? I am assuming MTH can send one out and I can swap it out? Last pic shows bent pantograph.

AEM7's had stainless steel panels? All the ones I've ever seen were painted Platinum Mist (silver) above the stripes, as far as I know.

I don't know this for certain, but since the AEM7's pre-date Protosound 2, there should have been enough of them made over the years that MTH should have pantograph assemblies in their parts department.

Congrats on your new loco! I always loved the AEM7s. I used to see them in Penn Station and in the yards in Queens from the LIRR trains on my way to and from the city.

The AEM7 is a stainless car body and was the last railroad work produced by the Budd Company. One of those contracts where Budd supplied the body, ASEA provided most of the significant mechanical parts and EMD assembled them to satisfy the "Buy American" clause.

Later paint schemes are Platinum Mist. With all the work these have done since 1979, perhaps it was cheaper to paint them?

As nice as these new ones are even with PS2, Atlas did a pretty good job with theirs in 1999:

Only problem I have with the "Toasters" is that they replaced this slightly more famous locomotive: Frown It was going to happen eventually I guess.

Overall, that is a nice release from MTH. I wish their ALP44 was closer for New Jersey Transit. It would have been great on my roster.

Between Atlas and MTH, I'm sure you can get a pantograph replacement, but it should be covered under warranty. Hope you get it fixed. These are fun little creatures for a layout.

Atlas did a nice job in both scales:

Hmmm, I just noticed that the "MARC" nameplate fell off of the O unit. Frown

LOL. My Dad has the HO ones, I forgot about that!

I have the MARC car set that went with the O version. I've been contemplating a NJT repaint Confused

Sreaman, I was 14 when I rode the last ride of the GG1. Just enough time to get them in my head forever.

Yes I did but I don't think the Amfleet cars have shipped yet??? Wonder if they will be chromed too??

I did determine that the entire body is chromed...then masked and painted. I guess that means that the engine is delicate and too much handling will harm the finish.

How many of those front lights are operational? How about the four strobes on the corners? Thanks.

I say just bend it back if you're going to replace it anyway. If you're careful, nothing should happen. Handrails on my diesels usually get bent in storage, and bending them back into shape is no problem.

They all work. Strobes flash.

I will call MTH about a replacement pantograph...I see it snaps off. Atlas wins hands down in the engine packaging. You can remove and replace the engine in the box and it always looks new. The MTH box fit is sooo tight you can never get the wrap just right.

Or should I contact JusTrains and send back for a replacement? How do they deal with stuff like this? On similar issues with Lionel purchased from Charles Ro...I just return and they reship a new one.

I think LED white. I am not running it yet or handling it much until I see if it can be replaced by JusTrains..who I assume would just send it back to MTH.

I got to "hostle" these SWEDISH MEATBALLS(assembled in US but made in Sweden if I remember correctly...hence the monnicker by which the employees called them) near the end of my employment with Conrail, from which I was permanently furloughed in 1981. I got to RUN most of the GG1's on the Northeast Corridor...even the 4800 in which the white stuffing inside the seats used to stick up between my legs!!! I fired for a very experienced ENGINEMAN who took me on a joyride in a G over 100 mph "LITE" west of the Baltimore Tunnels. The legal LITE speed was 45mph at the time!!! The GG1's were "topheavy" and subject to "rollover" according to several hogheads I fired under...not sure if this was an old-wives tale or not. As to the toy versions...HELP ME~~~ I know MTH made them as well as Atlas(LOCOMATIC)...my question is whether the MTH versions were more realistic, and if they were offered in PS 1 or PS 2 or both???

Looks like MTH is still sticking to the incorrect darker blue on this loco. ONe may want to recheck those LED strobes. It could be blue led's which gives off a real strobe like effect.

Ron,

Swedish Meatballs they were. Mostly Swedish parts with a little help from Budd and EMD. Cool experiences. Thanks for sharing.

Off all the AEM7's offered to date, I still give the nod to the Atlas model for accuracy in modeling. The LOCOMATIC control system and the sounds by Dallee stink, but it is a great running and looking conventional locomotive.

MTH made these in PS1 and PS2. They are good models and the PS2 has that going for it. I just find the detail a little less refined. However, I'm splitting hairs on this one. They are pretty similar models.

My bigger complaint has nothing to do with this model, but the ALP44's of NJT and Septa (1 unit). They are different designs based on the Rc7 prototype and have different and significant detail differences on the roof as well as the front(s).

This Amtrak model overall is a nice offering even with the paint a little dark for it's original paint scheme.

The thing that always bugged me about the Atlas Septa AEM7 was the strobes. I see these engines twice a day every workday, and they dont have stobes on the roof. Now, of course, the first photo i found while searching on line had the strobes on the roof, just like the atlas model, but there were plenty of other pics of the AEM7 without the strobes. Anyone know the story behind this?

Thanks,
Nick

I have the MTH AmTrack AEM7, and this is a real beauty. The strobes are yellow and look very realistic. The only complaint I have is that the plastic grab irons are very fragile. I've actually removed all of mine because I broke quite a few of them in normal handling.

I'm not an AmTrack fan, and I bought this loco to repaint as a green and orange Great Northern Eek, but the stainless looks so good.

The Atlas O NJT APL-44 is an accurate ALP-44 with the correct side screens. It is not just an NJT paint job on an AEM-7.

I have the Atlas Amtrak AEM-7. I will agree the Dallee stuff is the pits. It is probably why these were getting blown out when Atlas O moved their warehouse. It's a shame that Lionel wasn't licensing right when Atlas O started making locos.

It won't bend. Its diecast metal which bends once then cracks. It will snap off easily for replacement. I wonder if the pantographs can operate off catenary power?

Fred,

This is correct. It is not totally accurate in the windshields, but it is close enough. I was referring to the recent MTH release, which is a AEM7 in NJT colors.

I don't have one but being a MTH Premier I am sure it is just like the Premier GG-1 and does. Marty Fitz runs a live catenary on his layout.

No, they can,t run off Cantenary Power.

There is no Cantenary switch on the AEM7 and the manual doesn,t indicate
it as well..

The Cantenary Panographs on the P/S 2 AEM7 leaves a lot to be desired.

A picture of the Swedish original RC4
This loco, 1166, did run in the US as Amtrak X995 in 1976. This lead to the AEM7

Thanks for the picture. What is the date of this photo?

I have pictures of it in Amtrak Livery. In fact there is a great photo of it in "The Remarkable GG1" with a GG1 pulling an E60 and the X995. Kind of a past meets present meets future photo.

The GG1 is well represented in museums. The E60's won't be missed much, but at least one remains in Strasburg as a footnote on electric traction.

Will the AEM7 become a museum piece in another 10-15 years when they are finally retired? I suspect a few might be saved as they have proven themselves admirably in service. If nothing else, they will be remembered as the locomotive that finally slayed the mighty GG1 Smile

I got the MTH Amtrak AEM-7 with the swoosh logo a couple of weeks ago and I have to say that I am very pleased with it. I really like the sounds on the locomotive. Very well done. Smile

I got my Phase V AEM-7 just before Allentown:

Boy, this was tough to photograph. With the reflective surfaces, it practically vanishes against the wood-paneled wall. I finally propped up sheets of paper just out of camera range in order to get light-colored reflections off the carbody so it would stand out from the wall.

No video yet, but this unit sounds just like my BB-3 "Rats" without the subway compressor (maybe--I didn't have it on long enough to hear it cycle).

Rail Ride, could you try and do a video? I'd like to hear the horn, bell, station sounds, etc on the AEM-7
