This comes up every now & again, and I always have to say that my all-time favorite OGR Forum handle is "eccentric crank".

Oh, I apologize John. I have never seen this come up before. I hate to be redundant and bring up a topic that has already been covered.
But I like that eccentric crank as well. |

I always thought that "Paul Fischer" was rather novel. Not only that but it means something to me; it's my real name. I always thought that if I want to say something, I really don't mind people knowing just who said it. I don't mind being responsible for my own thoughts. No quarrel with those that use some kind of "handle" for a name. I did that, too, during the CB radio era, but sometimes this forum gets into some fairly deep subject matter. If someone finds fault with my opinion, (which I have been known to offer, freely) I would just as soon hear about it directly.

I took my late Father,s nickname as my handle here. Just a small way I
honor his memory. It comes from Hopalong Cassidy. HOPPY |

Wes - no need to apologize - I like seeing these go around every now & again, as there are usually some more handles to talk about.
I was going to go with just "John", but it was already taken, at least at the time. Maybe I should change it to "JustJohn"... Here in a tiny town in rural Maine we have a fellow with a railway museum and layout (MEC caboose out front). His layout is HO, so I had to be Hiram0.
By the way, our little town was once the interchange point between the 2 foot gauge Bridgeton and Saco River, and the Maine Central. Cheers! Jan |

We own a bungalow at a place called Paulinskill Lake, thus Paulinskill. Had I known when originally signing up how wonderful this forum is I would have used my real name, Owen Sturm. Now after a few years and many friends I do not feel the need to change and confuse people.

As is well known, I use my real name for the site, but if I went to a handle, it would be "Allegheny" after my favorite articulated steamer.

Manhattan (the main county/boro of New York City) is largely laid out as a grid with streets running east-west, avenues running north-south. Part of the southeast corner of the boro in known as the "Lower East Side" with avenues named after letters ie. Avenue A, Avenue B, Avenue C, Avenue D. Only 1/2 mile long and about 1/4 mile wide, the area was for generations where newly arrived immigrants would initially settle and then migrate out ASAP. Gentrified after the 1970's, the neighborhood has now largely turned 'upscale' and plays less of a grounding role then in the past.
I was born on a street located between Avenues A&B, and it was where I received my first Lionel train set on Christmas 1953. Cheers, and thanks for asking. |

I use my last name and birthday, June 22
I have heard that Boomer is also a railroad term but I don't know what it is, maybe one of you could tell me. Doug |

Well I guess it's time to reintroduce myself to the forum again. I guess we have had almost 100% turnover since the last time this topic came up. My name is Robert Ottosen. My last name is pronounced as "Oddis'n". The older kids at high school nicknamed me "Oddie". I was going to use Oddie as my handle here but it was already taken so I invented Odd-d to be pronounced as Oddie. With a last name like mine one gets used to hearing it get murdered all the time. Odd-d

Here you go Doug - BOOMER—Drifter who went from one railroad job to another, staying but a short time on each job or each road. This term dates back to pioneer days when men followed boom camps. The opposite is home guard. Boomers should not be confused with tramps, although they occasionally became tramps. Boomers were railroad workers often in big demand because of their wide experience, sometimes blackballed because their tenure of stay was uncertain. Their common practice was to follow the "rushes"-that is, to apply for seasonal jobs when and where they were most needed, when the movement of strawberry crops, watermelons, grain, etc., was making the railroads temporarily short-handed. There are virtually no boomers in North America today. When men are needed for seasonal jobs they are called from the extra board. Wild Mary (AKA Nick) "Riding The Wild Mary" |

Everyone can use those cute names. Reminds me of the old days when everyone had CB names that they used. I want people to know me as Marty Fitzhenry and that is why I use my own name. I have had Forum guys come up to me at York and say hello and I did not have a clue who they were without the cute names they choose to use on the Forum.
One thing that I would like to see is everyone using an email address so they can be contacted and a location where thay live. I have seen many times guys looking for info or contacts in the area they live and they do not have thier area in the profile. I can be contacted by email or phone number. Number 90 was Santa Fe's one-and-only 3-unit Fairbanks-Morse Erie-Built passenger diesel, cussed or praised by those with varying viewpoints. I worked for Santa Fe and its successor for over 37 years, and was cussed and praised, too. At least they didn't trade me in after 15 years of service like they did with the 90.
