Found a nice desk top 500G hard drive on sale at Target for $99. My train pics were starting to eat up my hd and this is the perfect solution. Made by Western Digital.

Just FYI.

Something to consider is buying two drives and mirroring them. That way,
if one fails, you can replace it without losing everything or trying
to figure out how to back up 500g.

Better keep your train stuff off the big truck hard drives. Could punch camera 2 and up comes a Lionel Big Boy in action. Probably would be more interesting than the current play action.

Marty,
Western Digital was a good choice. I got a WD 160-gig external last year and it works great. Can't believe how they've come down in price. Eek You got yours for just a few bucks more than what mine cost.

99 is a bad price but some of the bigger online retailers have been in the 79.00 area lately for a bare drive. 1 Terabyte dives are out there in the 140-160 range

Frys is a good West Coast dealer (Frys.com)

They have an External (includes case) 500 Ext

Well I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in a pickup truck
She got run'd over by a damned old train

I did this about a year ago. I still keep all my important files and pictures on my PC but I bought a Netgear NAS (Network attached storage) device that contains 2 mirrored 750 gig sata drives. I then wrote a small batch file that copies all the recently updated files from my computer to the NAS device. This way if my hard disk ever fails I buy a new one, reinstall the OS and I am back in business. Plus because it is networked (I have 3 computers in my house) my wife and kids all have their own folders so their work is backed up and centrally located on the NAS device as well.

Marty - Is 500G's enough for your train pics? Razz

Simpetech also makes some excellent external drives as well. It's amazing how much storage space that one can get for under $100.

Anyone who doesn't have an external drive should really consider this as their next purchase!
