Lionel offered up their UP die-cast ore cars 4-pack (6-11844) in 1998 catalog. A couple of questions for you with good memories:

1.) Were these designed to go with their UP Veranda Turbine diesel engine (6-18149) which ended up coming out years later?

2.) Were any "add-on" UP die-cast ore cars issued after the 11844 set? It would seem so as 4 ore cars behind that engine seems inadequate.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have the sku numbers at my disposal, but add-on cars were offered in the Heritage catalog, 1998, as you pointed out and were add-ons to the already catalogued UP GP9 set in 1996.

I think the cars would look fantastic behind the turbine, though.

I believe there was a total of 10 UP die cast ore cars produced, as a fellow club member recently sold his entire set. Not 100% sure, though.

If you're breathing and can attain verticality, everything else is a minor annoyance. MVS.

Lionel cataloged the Union Pacific GP9 Unit Ore Train Set (11837) in its Fall 1997 heritage catalog. The set came with 6 ore cars and a caboose. Also cataloged were a powered GP9 and dummy set to extend the entire set to three diesels and 6 ore cars. In the 1998 heritage catalog, the 4 car add on pack was cataloged (11844, the topic of the thread). So the total set length comes out to three GP9s, 2 powered and one dummy, 10 ore cars, and a caboose.

While these would look pretty good behind the Veranda, Lionel actually cataloged a UP freight car 4-pack for it in 1998 (21757).

While these would look pretty good behind the Veranda, Lionel actually cataloged another matching set for it in 1999.

Pictures in a second.

Nicholas,

Thanks for the history and setting me straight on these ore cars. Although they were designed to go with the GP9 set, I still think they would look good behind the Veranda as well. Do you happen to know the catalog numbers for the 1st 6 ore cars?

You piqued my interest regarding the matching set for the Veranda. I checked the 3 1999 Lionel catalogs and could not find them. Do you know which catalog they appeared in and what the catalog number is?

Thanks...

My bad, it was 1998 volume two. It's the set under the pacemaker set; I have it pictured now. Item # is 21757.

I don't think it's the item numbers, but the 1997 catalog does say that the 6 ore cars were numbered UP64861-UP64866.

Also of note: There were actually 5 1999 catalogs. They were 1999 heritage, 1999 preview, then vol. I, II, and III. Each catalog had a totally different product line up.

Nicholas,

Thanks for the follow-up. I found the matching set in the '98 catalog. It just does not float my boat as much as the ore cars do.

The challenge will be finding those 1st 6 cars for separate sale.

Check Ebay regularly. Sellers usually do break-ups.

Trainz actually has the 11844 set listed right now.
