I know, I've already installed one from another unit but I would like to get a replacement.

Gary,
Call the Lionel West coast office and ask for Ken on Tuesday - please give Ken your address and ask him to connect with me to supply the motor. We will send a couple to you from our parts bin. jon CTO, Lionel LLC |

Weaver is doing TMCC and EOB upgrades now !!!!! Check out their WEBSITE !!! Their prices are posted as well !!!
Fredstrains |

Wow; almost 31,000 viewings of this topic!
Does that qualify for any sort of a record? Rod |
||||
|
Probably. And it just goes to prove how much TAS is concerned about its present and future customers. ... not to mention its reputation in the model railroading industry! |
||||
|
I'm not sure the CIA has briefed him yet on this situation. Conspiracy theorists believe that the TAS files are still locked in Dick Cheney's old bunker alongside the Area 51 folders and several test waterboards. Their release would throw the nation into chaos. |

" Weaver Models is now offering engine upgrades from conventional to TMCC. Also upgradeable to Engineer On Board. Don't have a Weaver? Not to worry - we are offering this service on all makes of O Gauge Diesel and Steam Locomotives. Call for details or to arrange your upgrade."

And the sun still rises in the east. |

There is an update on the TAS website:
"Effective February 27, 2009 Train America Studios will no longer be offering aftermarket sales. Please visit The Electric Railroad Co. web site at www.electricrr.com for command control upgrade products. You can contact The Electric Railroad Co. support at errsupport@lionel.com Train America Studios will honor the One (1) year warranty as we have in the past. We will no longer be taking phone calls for support of the product line. Instead all support and inquiries will be handled through electronic mail only. warranty@tastudios.com. For those who are concerned about the OEM sales of our products, the licensed manufacturers will still continue to use products such as Engineer On Board (EOB) speed control, Turbo Smoke Units and SAW Boards. This change in the business model in no way will affect the OEM marketplace." Sounds like they are pretty much done. Nothing about sales of remaining parts or installation of TAS products by others. Ken Ken |
||||

Somewhat interesting that they specifically refer people to ERR for upgrade products. I suppose there will still be speculation as to whether there is a joining of forces going on here.
|
||||
|
Kind of a bummer. I snagged an unused EOB off a train pal to keep on hand but not sure what I'll do for some upgrades in the future.
I've had no luck with the Cruise M and IR tethers. |
||||

Norm,
We have offered many times to help you with the IR tether, which works just fine. Just contact Ken and we will be glad to assist! This message has been edited. Last edited by: SantaFeFan, jon CTO, Lionel LLC |

Norm,
I had a few issues when I installed the Cruise M in my Lionel J-1a with the wireless tether, but Jon and Ken were able to quickly sort out the problems and I could not be more pleased with the result. The support they provided was second to none. Eric Hofberg |

Eric (Chug),
Were you able to get 4 chuffs/revolution on your J-1a? Ron Volunteers are not paid because they are worthless, they are not paid because they are priceless! |

Your efforts were definitely appreciated Jon. Maybe I'll have better luck on the next project.

I think this is exactly it. Since ElecticRR is now part of Lionel and Mike Reagan is now part of Lionel, they didn't want competing products. It kind of leaves current users of TAS products(EOB, Turbo smoke, etc.)out in the cold for replacement parts. I guess it all leads to ElectricRR for aftermarket TMCC products or DDynamics but they don't have speed control. Didn't JC say at some point that he was concerned about some of the licensing of TMCC products. |
||||
|
![]() |
Yes JC did have concern but I heard he read the pulse of the hobby world and said world would be very unhappy if he pulled TMCC from the licensee.
We kept hearing TAS was going in a new direction and they were not going away. Was it a lie, is it going to happen or was TAS squashed by Lionel? Regards, Gary Long live the Boston & Albany. |

One of the folks at TAS, had told me that they were back ordering a couple of Puff and Chuff boards so that I could finish a couple of projects. This was not long after they first closed down. I figured it was not likely to happen. I never heard another word. If the owners of TAS, ever start selling to the public again, I will give them a wide birth. If they had done the things that they said they were going to do, when they shut down, they would have our trust if they restart.

How many times does it have to posted on this thread that Weaver is doing TAS installs and repairs? Its not clear if they are selling parts to do-it-yourselfers like myself but their installation charges look extremely reasonable to me. Its also been pointed out that you can duplicate the performance of TAS EOB with an ElectricRR cruise board coupled with Digital Dynamics RS-4. TAS is dead, long live Weaver. Pete |

Ok...can anyone clarify if Weaver will sell parts to us? I have a bunch of upgrades to do. Al

May I suggest that you send Weaver an email at customerservice@weavermodels.com or call them at 570-473-9434. Link to Weaver's Contact Us web page. GregM |

Pete.
Before you put all your faith in Weaver, I send them my Lionel SF 4-8-4 for an EOB (4 chuffs) and they send it back that they could not do anything because it had the tether connection (between the eng. and tender). I also talked to I think Ken, the head guy, at ELECTRIC RR, and he also said they could NOT do anything fo me. So I'm still here with my engine, hoping and wishing. Reuben |

Reuben,
There is a fairly easy fix for the chuff issue on the Lionel Steam. A while back I posted about a Lionel Berkshire and my Chessie Steam Special that I updated to 4 chuffs per revoulution using a Digital Dynamics chuff sensor with 4 small magnets I glued to one of the drive wheels. The sensor needs to be soldered in place of the existing sensor which is on one of the drive wheels. If you don't mind doing this type of work, it only takes a few hours to do. Here are pics and videos of the two engines. Berkshire: Video of Berkshire Chessie Steam Special: Video of Chessie Steam Special

I attended the Lionel Vision Line presentation in Atlanta last night and one thing struck me about a comment that was made concerning a dedicated service center for the purchasers of these engines and products. The comment was that Lionel would have a service center located in Ohio strictly for Vision Locomotives. Lionel has recently significantly downsized, leaving a void in many of their services. I know that this is speculation, but I am wondering if TAS has been absorbed by Lionel, abandoning all TAS products and will concentrate their talents on repairing the electronics in these new engines. As many have said, TAS appeared to be very successful with a demand for what they offered. Maybe Mike Reagan convinced his former co-workers that this new set-up insured the best for them and Lionel? I also sense the reason that Lionel chose the odd engines that they did for the new Vision Line.... these are the only sized engines that would house the new electronic boards that will be installed in them. These are both speculations and open to criticism, but just my thoughts of trying to make sense of TAS being gone and such odd engines chosen.

Do you know if TAS was able to upgrade engines with wireless tethers? I am guessing a special interface would have to made to translate the wired signals from the tender to wireless and vice versa. Another option would be to replace the wireless with wired tether. What has been lost with TAS's departure is development of solutions for new technology but Vision and Legacy will obviate the need for that anyway. Pete |

For most folks that do their own work, the 4 chuffs is no problem. There are at least 3 ways to get four chuffs from a loco that has less. In the past O scale has been considered the hands on scale. Some folks are afraid of disassembling an engine. After you have done one or two, you will find it is not that hard, to do your self.

I have the same speculations that you have. I live about ten miles from TAS. I bought from them when they bought the Lionel and Thomas the Tank dealerships from Trig Marina in the 1990's. They had moved to a little building behind the boat dealership. Then when Wendy's built their new restaurant they moved to their present site and had a full retail store devoted to Lionel with a small repair shop. In time the repair shop starting doing TMCC conversions and Mike closed down the retail store. He fully was TAS. Fast forward 2009. After five years of non-Lionel involvement I got back into the hobby and built a new layout in my new home. I went to TAS and they no longer exist in the form we knew. I then discovered that Mike was hired by Lionel and the new office is about 1/4 mile from TAS. Do a Mapquest if you have the addresses. When can try to connect the dots but it is just speculation. The only thing I will say for sure is that Mike is a good guy. Times change and he has changed with the times. Philip |

Philip,
Its only speculation until you find out that a friend's engine was sent back to Lionel for repair and ended up in a Lionel Service Station in Ohio... |
|||
|
There is no speculation that the Lionel Service Station is only 1/4 mile from the TAS office. That is a fact easily confirmed by Mapquest and personally seen by me. There is also no speculation that Mike now works for Lionel. There is speculation on how all of this occurred and if the ownership of TAS was part of the move. Philip PS I will not post the Lionel Service Station's address. You can find it at lionel.com if you look hard enough. It is located in a office condo park in a very good part of town. There is a handmade sign over the door that says "Lionel Ohio". PK |

Pete,
Yes I did send my scale C/O lionel no. 6-38076 Berkshire Eng. for the chuffs about a year ago to TAS Mike Reagan and they installed the EOB, (4 chuffs). And this eng. did have the wireless tether. (the only thing is it took 8 weeks to get it back). I miss TAS. I've met Mike Reagan and he has fixed one of my 3rd rail brass eng when he was in Caifornia to visit Scott at 3rd Rail in Campbell. Very nice gentleman. Have a good one, Pete. Reuben |

Just last week I had to get a RA # from lionel to send an engine in for major repair. The address given to me for repair by Lionel was the Ohio address.
|
||||
|
Yes, they were. My Lionel SF 3751, SP AC-12 both have wireless tethers and were upgraded to EOB and run like a fine watch. I inquired about doing my Lionel UP 9000 being upgraded. They told me at that time they could upgrade and keep the wireless, but due to the data limits, to keep the right syncopated chuffs, I would lose the back-up light. Not a big deal to me, but since i ended up selling it I never did get that upgrade. So, yes, TAS could upgrade and keep the wireless tether. And I too am saddened for us to lose such a fine after-market company. I enjoyed tinkering with the TAS stuff, even if I had to send some of my stuff in to get fixed after I "completed" it!! Though a couple weren't my fault, one a bad board and another a shorted motor, that I could not analyze. Greg. Sapulpa - home of the Tulsa-Sapulpa Union RR. |

Could it be that JC wants us to buy his new engines and not upgrade our older Lionel or other engines? Seems like a lot of the aftermarket manufacturers have been assimilated - Kovich, TAS, & ERR. Is DD next to go?

I guess if lionel did not like the competion from tas, you just buy them out and then shut them down. Do if yourselfers now have to buy from Electric rr but those who had them done by tas still have weaver.
Sort of getting it both ways, do it yourself with ERR or have it done for you in ERR or TAS. I still would like to know what happened to Ernie and his better days are coming from tas announcement many days in the past. |

Not to sound like a new kid on the block, but after reading some posts: is TAS a company that offers to install different manufactuers products like Protosound or TMCC for people?

Will Lionel repair an engine that is out of warranty or do they refer you to a Linel Service Station? If you are refered to a service station for an electronics problem..... GOOD LUCK! I could not find one service station in Ohio other then TAS that would fix my engine.
