Scott was showing a sample with the finish of the GGD Santa Fe cars for those in attendance....

Did anyone see the sample and if so what did you think?

Scott if you are seeing this, how about a picture on your website?

I didn't find 3rd Rail or GGD at their usual spot or anywhere. Was Scott still in China?

Paul,
We were at the same spot as always-DD10 in the Orange hall and had a sample of the SF Chief finished extrusion.

Rheil,

How about a picture or two?

Thanks

Yves,
Send an e-mail to Scott requesting photos. I literally just finished packing the extrusion for UPS pickup to send back to him.

I can say that the car body finish has no "coloration" (blue, bronze, etc.) and has what I would term a satin finish. We asked a lot of people at York what they thought and did not receive any negative comments - only positive.

I always wonder about the results of comments at York. My question is, was anyone commenting about the extrusion a buyer of the set of Super Chief cars, and how many were Santa Fe modelers, 2 rail or 3RS modelers to be more specific.

The issue of what the finish was to be like was a previously debated topic about a year back. There were complaints that the finish was too dull. Again, this finish is too dull. I hope the extrusion was just to show the fluting and not the finish. I would like the finished product will more closely reflect the shine of the prototype.

This is what I have as a picture of the 1937 Super Chief. It is much shinier than the extrusion.

I have 2 sets on order, one 2 rail and one 3 rail. I also ordered 2 Key E unit sets an E1 and an E3 for the passenger cars. I know the Key units will be superb, I hope the GGD passenger cars are what I would expect.

The reason I post this here is because my comments alone do not have the weight of the comments of a few that might agree.

rheil told Yves send an email to ask Scott for a picture. I did the same and the reply was to wait for a picture of the sample to be posted. I would do so, but that might be too late to get the shine correct.

I would like to generate some comments pro or con.

I agree with Marker here on all the points he just made.

Add my voice please!

And I just pre-ordered all 9 (as long as 3 road numbers of each are made) of the ATSF steamers coming up.

Here is another picture from another 3 Rails thread, showing the extrusion
on the side:

I agree with Marker that the shine of aluminum is not the same as stainless steel.

However, maybe a high gloss varnish can improve the gloss and protect the aluminum from corrosion. It is possible that the extrusion seen at this show may have been touched by many people and exposed to air for a long time and thus was corroded.

If GGD chooses to ignore the shine issue, the advantage of aluminum may wane. If you look at the MTH video of the display they had at York, their plated passenger cars look very nice. It's too bad they don't make scale sized cars. (Not to say that some of the cars like the baggage cars aren't scale sized.)

When Atlas O comes out with their plated Santa Fe cars in the not too distant future, they will be accurate and the shine will be there. GGD will loose their early advantage if these cars are not up to snuff.

If future Santa Fe set will be offered by GGD, like the 1951 Super Chief, the Chief with 20th Century cars, the San Francisco Chief, the San Diegan, or any of the other streamlined trains, there should be consistancy in the finishes of the stainless steel passenger cars.

Scott if you are watching, I did email you and now is the time to get it right. It will mean a lot to us Santa Fe modelers.

Guys,

If you balance the color of this picture so that the Pullman Green car looks green, you can then see that the finish on our SF Super Chief is very bright and shiny. I will take new picture of the sample when I get them back.
