To quote Scott Mann. This will be the best CN Northern ever produced!
Well not yet. The revised model is headed in the right direction but is not there yet. According to my blue line. there are two not one air reservoir on the pilot deck. the crosshead dose not run up hill at a 10-15 degrees and the side rod between the centre drivers is not taperd. The sand domes have straight
sides are taller and narrower than those on the model. In fact the CN sand domes are so differnt, that the domes on the model are not even a good starting point. The model has a new housing for the distrabution valve but it has some major issues. the flange is to high it schould be lower almost touching the boiler at it centre. The top edges have a 6" radious on the front and a 2-3" radious on the sides. Don't go away there is more. the ash pans are about half the size they schould be and the valve hanger is the wrong shape. I can't help but feel that Sunset is not realy commited to this project. It seem a pretty lack luster effort. By for now
Mr.CN

So, other than that, how did you like the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

Scott Mann has already received numerous corrections based on the pilot model. That is the whole purpose of doing a pilot model, so people can look it over and make suggested changes. If you really want this model to be as accurate as possible, e-mail your corrections to Scott.

Yeah, why discuss model accuracy here? Its much more fun to TYPE IN CAPITAL LETTERS and use exclamation points!

George,
I will offer this perspective on corrections on Sunset Models, and even though I can not speak directly for Scott Mann I believe I know his perspective also.

Sunset relies on a cadre of people to provide advice on model accuracy. Among these are folks who see pilot models at shows, provide drawings and photos, have firsthand experience, etc., and who offer advice on corrections.

The Forum is generally not used as a reference for corrections inasmuch as it can be difficult to actually surmise the details of a correction that needs to be made.
EX: "the headlight is wrong" presents no information as to what would make it correct. Even more definitive statements such as " the headlight should be a Pyle National type X" are not given the credence when posted on the Forum as when they are given directly to Sunset. It is far better to e-mail Sunset, provide a photo, or talk to them at shows about the details of corrections to be made.

I believe Sunset wants to do models as accurately as possible and the statements in my previous paragraph state their process for doing so.

I'm in for one of the GTW 4-8-4's, and I hope it will be an accurate model. My guess is that Scott will deliver the goods as he has on other projects.

Sunset is easy to reach; it makes sense to e-mail them directly with suggested corrections.

I think Mr. CN needs to hit the reload button on his browser. He may be looking at the old pictures of the previous sample model.

Here are some pictures of the new model, against the real engine.

Valve hanger, real U2g vs Sunset Models U2g:

Domes: real U2g vs Sunset U2g:

Right Side:

Hindsight is always 20/20. Yea, the domes are off a little, I will see what I can do about that. But most of the other details are as close as we usually get. I think it is a fine effort, and I don't think Mr. CN knows how much work actually goes into making a model like this. I invite him to try.

These models should be done in 30-45 days. I will see what I can do about the domes. I think all other points were already addressed. Also, there is a second air tank behind the first. It is in the shadow, but it is visible.

Again, I want to thank the numerous CN fans that offered drawings, photos, went out to the locos and took fresh pictures, so we could get it RIGHT. I won't let you down.

BTW: I agree, it is best to email the importer directly. I was only told about this thread this morning from another forumite. If there are delays in getting a correction, then it is much more difficult to turn it around at the factory in time.

Don't forget... This is your hobby! Enjoy it. And thanks for all your good advise and support.

Cheers.

Scott Mann: Thank's for posting the comparison photo's.This cleares up some of my concerns.I do know what it takes to build model locomotives. It will cost as much if not more to build from scratch as it dose to buy one of your fine models.I recant on most of what I said about the Northern but if you could fix the sand domes and put a whight stripe on the smoke deflectors I would be a very happy guy. What is with the blue line? You guys dont play hockey down there do you? Hay! What about those Penguins TTFN Mr.CN

Scott,

I'm sold (literally) on this model, and I'm glad I preordered one from you. How far behind the FEF northern is this engine? I would like both...but I need them spaced out a little.

The fef is over a year overdue so if that is an indication of delivery you can wait a year for the cn engine.
Does the gtw engine meet the same differences that the cn version does and how about the ohio central restored engine, how correct is it.

did the crosshead guide get level. on the photo it looksw like the model has them going uphill.
I have put my reversation on hold until I see the final product. I got one of the c&o 614 with the wrong tender and now wait for the final product before I order.

The 6200 is going to be a fairly accurate model, now that most of the bugs have been addressed. I will be looking forward to getting the ones I reserved from "Trains and Such" here in Calgary.
Ironlake, I think you will be happy with the results. There has been alot of e-mailing going on behind the scenes to get this engine to the stage it is at now.
There will be a few more changes on small details pertaining to striping, cab number placement and correct tender data that will be addressed.
Hopefully, I will get mine before the Edmonton Train show in late September. It will be great to see one of these babies, pulling the GGD CNR Heavyweight coaches I have.
Now, if I could only get a matching Head-End Set and Sleepers for the train! Wink Al

The cross head guide was easily corrected.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention. That is how we get it "RIGHT".

Height to top of cab is 15'2"
Height to top of tender 15' 4.5"

So yes, it is a little higher. al

We are making the CN U-2G in 4 different numbers, 6200, 6218, 6227, 6233. Models are not done yet, so it might be late September that they are delivered. We will keep you updated.

Scott Will any of these CN be made with out the control electronics for Just Trains. I understand they are going to do the PS-2 installation on the units bought from them. Since all my Power is MTH PS2 this option is very attractive to me. Thanks in advance Smile

Folks,

Was at the factory last week and they were just getting started putting the boilers on the chassis. They will be done end of next week and then we will inspect them the week after. Sorry, I don't any new pics yet, but they are beauties. Just wait, you will see.

No, we did not make any of these models without electronics in this run. But that doesn't mean that JTD can't put PS-2 in your engine.

Let Shawn or Kirk know what you want. And we will send them what you need.
