I just received my latest CTT, I forgot to look but I think it's NOV !. The Theme is Hi-Rail and realistic operation. There are some Very Good quality layouts in there. Could even be people on this board, but anyway if you don't subscribe it's worth a look when it hits the streets. Dave

Come visit the North Schuylkill High Railers display layout. Open every Sunday 12-5. Conventional, TMCC, & DCS 24' x 55 multi-level Schuylkill Mall, Frackville PA.

It looks like CTT is changing its focus a bit. Norm C. (the cover shot) is a Forumite.

Afraid of a little competition from time to time? I think not! Competition makes my job even more fun than it already is. My personal (and professional) feeling is that one needs to evaluate any publication over the long term, and not just based on a single issue or two. And who could possibly deny that healthy competition benefits the consumer, be it a magazine reader or in any other area?

All of us at OGR are dedicated to giving our readers the best possible publication we can, and to grow our readership by continuing to make the magazine attractive to hobbyists and to advertisers who support this segment of the hobby, especially in difficult economic times, with a whole lot of trust, confidence, and dollars. We don't intend to let any of these fine folks down, now or in the future.

Congrats to both Norm and Dennis on their appearances in CTT. Both know--or certainly should know--that they're also welcome in our pages, as well, just as they are always welcome on this forum. The OGR welcome mat is always out to those who have reaped the benefits of this great hobby and who are willing to share their expertise and experiences with others.

My personal preference is OGR over CTT. I think the current issue with Norm C's layout is a step in the right direction for CTT. IMHO the repetative articles on Post War Lionel have become stale. The current movement is toward hi-rail and 3 rail scale, both magazines should stay focused on that format. I also enjoy the how-to articles in CTT,and I feel OGR should do more of those too.

The current CTT issue is definitely one of their finest for the hi-rail enthusiast. The coverage of Norm's layout is excellent, and Dennis Brennan has produced another fine article as he always does.

But CTT, by its very title, is committed to an emphasis on "classic trains" which would seem to indicate the collector as their target audience.

I have been reading OGR since the days when it was called "O Scale Railroading" with an emphasis on the 2-railer, right through the Myron Biggar era when the emphasis shifted to 3-rail, and right to the present.

Throughout its history, the emphasis has been on realistic modeling, and since the shift to 3-rail, the majority of layouts featured have been "hi-rail".

As far as circulation is concerned, as the current shift in interest toward "hi-rail" and 3-rail scale continues, if I were a betting man, I would place my money on a increase in circulation for OGR as well.

And speaking of how-to articles in OGR, I happen to know of a few on tap for your winter reading and modeling pleasure! Wink

Just FYI - I looked up (google search) circulation numbers that I wanted to use in another thread:
Classic Toy Trains = 60,000
I couldn't find OGR's.

I agree with the comments of the latest CTT, however, I think OGRR is a better magazine. The current issues of each mag, especially with OGRR emphasis on narrow gauge doesn't do it for me. I just let my CTT lapse, however, if they bring out more issues like the Nov issue, I will re-think that decision. Overall, I prefer OGRR.

I read both OGR and CTT with equal eagerness. To say that one is better than the other is like saying Coke is better than Pepsi. When I'm thirsty they both taste good to me. Wink

Actually, I would love to have seen the first PW Lionel showroom layout with pics of scale stuff (More than F-3's and 763 Hudsons). G, how about a scale EP-5 (Pun intended!)

The layout by today's standards would be crude, but cutting edge at the time.

All of you who know me are aware that I am a huge fan of OGR and the good people, should I say dear friends?, who own and publish it and who bring us this wonderful OGR Forum where we have made so many lifelong friends. I am very greatful to the folks at OGR for enriching my life in countless ways.

Having said that, I too was delighted to see CTT's excellent issue showcasing the growth of Hirail as an important segment of the 3-rail hobby. OGR and CTT are both great publications and their friendly competition enriches the hobby for all of us. As a "Hi-railer", I was delighted to see CTT come to the scale table, even if belatedly. I'm a "big tent" guy, as all who know me will attest, and I'm thrilled whenever I see evidence of hi-rail appreciation in all quadrants of the 3-rail universe.

I have long been a fan of Norm Charbonneau's work in the hobby and the generosity with which he shares his remarkable creations on the internet. I was thrilled to see Norm's layout featured on the cover of CTT. It is the influence of hi-railers like Norm and Bob Bartizek who with others have pioneered engine and rolling stock weathering and layout realism and ushered in a new niche in the 3 rail hobby that can be enjoyed by all.

I agree that the latest issue of CTT was one of their best. I guess it's natural to feel that way when they dedicate an issue to the portion of the hobby that you like the most. I also agree with the comment about loving both magazines. I get equally thrilled at either's arrival in my mailbox.

OGR's forum however is hands down the best - period!
