I have the opportunity to aquire a Boston & Albany Scale Berkshire w/whistle & bell. Is it very difficult to upgrade this to TMCC. Is this someting I can do, or do I need to have someone do it for me.

Is this a recent engine? If it is, you may just need to plug in a few small circuit boards. Older engines and engines not made by Lionel are a bit more difficult. Are you able to solder a few wires? I have converted several of my own engines.

Lisa Marie, When you speak of older engines, how old? Are there ways to update engines made pre-TMCC days to TMCC? When I earch the forum for upgrades I obviously get tons of threads about the recent TMCC/Legacy upgrades, so if there is a way to do such upgrades I am hoping you can point me in the right direction.. Pappy ------ I thoroughly support and encourage anyone that purchases any era model train for any reason at any price in any gauge made anywhere in the world. |

Here are your two best options.

I used an AC Commander from Electric RR to upgrade one old postwar F3. Works great, not difficult, but I reckon their new Cruise system is a better choice for engines that already have a DC motor; they do speed control without needing a flywheel/ optical timing track. No such thing so far as an AC cruise upgrade system...at least I haven't found one.
I have several old Postwar, not-particularly-valuable engines I'd like to drop DC motors and ERR's Cruise into. Wish someone made drop-in DC can motors with correct helical gear and mount to replace the Lionel vertical Pulmor motors in Postwar F3s and Alcos. Wahhh... |
