please help, I have a Norfolk & westeren class A 6-38049. I heard a spark from inside and now no smoke. The resistor and smoke board are fine, I looked at the command board/R2LCC08 and no signs of damage.I am puzzzled as to what happemed.Everthing else works even the fan unit.

I believe that unit may have a smoke regulator board.
It may have toasted.

You said the fan works. Do you feel any heat coming out of the stack?

With the shell off, Open the resivoir, put a few drops of smoke fluid on the resistor sheath. Put her on the track, turn the power on, address engine and hit aux1 9, see any smoke? Does the fan work? ... if not
Next, Turn off the power, check the resistor with a digital multi-meter. set it to ohms. does it say infinity? than the resistor is toast.
if you get a reading than check the feed wires to the board with the multimeter. I never knew there was a smoke regulator board, usually the issue is with the above.
