I am just getting back in to model railroading and my local hobby shop recommended that I buy a set with TMCC engine since the set is almost the price of the locomotive itself. I am definitely going to go with a Legacy controller at some point so my question is would I be making a mistake buying a kit with a TMCC engine or should I just spring the extra cash and get the Legacy engine now? I found plenty of info about the differences in the CAB-1 and CAB-2 but I can't find anything on the difference in the features of the locomotives. I love the variable whistle feature on the legacy remote. Will that feature work with a TMCC train or do you need both the engine and train?

Go for the Legacy. If you have the extra cash for it. I went from conventional to TMCC and thought that was wonderful then went to Legacy and it is just the best. It makes the TMCC engines run better and the pulmor motor run even better.

For the quillable whistle feature to work you need the Legacy control system AND a Legacy engine.
