I purchased a Legacy Command set and a Legacy GP7. I was pretty unfamiliar with the equipment and fumbled my way way thru it. When I tried to operate it everything seemed to be right ... powered up, Idled, made engine sounds. The whistle blew and the bell rang. The couplers fired, front and back. When I barely touched the speed knob, the engine took off and would not respond to speed control. I had to kill power to the 180W brick that I am using to stop it. Figuring that I messed up, I reprogrammed the engine "to restore features" resetting the engine as per the engine's owner's manual. The Command reverse unit switch was put back to "Run". Reprogramming was easy and I am sure I did it right, but the engine still only goes forward and heads toward top speed. Suggestions please! Thanks.

When you call up the engine in the handheld, you can go to Engine info and select edit the engine. You will see an option that allows you to clear the engine. Do that and after the message comes back that the engine has been successfully cleared, use the edit function again to load the module.

I have heard it said that that you should rprogram the engines address first before loading the module. If you have not done that , you might want to try that step after you have successfully cleared the engine but before you reload the module.

Try and see how it works for you.

Thanks for your help and your interest. I followed your suggestion as to clearing the engine and loaded the module successfully acording to the on screen message. I still can't control the engine speed with the velocity throttle. With no power to the track, I can turn the velocity knob and get response in the form of the gray bar on the screen, but with track power on, any movement of the knob sends the engine flying. I will try to play with it this weekend and maybe try changing channels and see if that helps. Thanks again.

The number you gave the engine should be in the upper right hand corner of the display of you screen before you put the module in the slot.
If your engine is (for example) engine 1 then the number 1 must be in the upper corner. If not, then press the number 1 on the display. If it is blinking press aux 1, then number should be solid, press engine info button and put in the module when told to do so on the screen. Try this and see if you have better luck. The remote does not know the correct number of your engine if it lets the engine go fast, unless"""""""""
You do not have a good ground. The ground prong on the power supply must be connected to a good house ground. I had to go direct to my water pipe with a 18 gauge wire and ran it right to the ground tap on a cheater ( a connector that allows you to bypass ground. Connect the wire to the brass prong sticking up from the cheater. No more lost signal problems.
If you have a modern house with a different gound system check out your electrical breaker box to see what ground is. It should have a good ground if new, but an older house can have a ground hole on the recepticle but not connected to a ground as there may not be one in that room.

Have you tried another TMCC loco? If the speed sensor on the flywheel goes bad, the locomotive will behave as you described. The sensor does not work so the system keeps accellerating the loco to get the right feedback speed level.

I called Lionel Tech Support this morning and without hesitation said, "you have a bad velocity circuit board". Gave me three options, take it to a local Lionel repair shop, ask Gryzboski for an exchange or send it back to Lionel. (Gryzboski said they have no more)I asked for a return authorization so off to Lionel it will go.
Thanks for the feedback from you guys.

Before you send it back ,remove top of eng and see if the flywheel with sensor is loose.I have had several that were loose and acted the same way. You use a small allen wrench to tighten.

One other thing to try is Make sure you power up Legacy and then track power!!

The engine might think your running conventional mode.

Unfortunately none of the suggestions as to the problem worked for me. I tried them all except running another TMCC engine. I don't have access to any.
ROYBOY seems to be correct as to the speed sensor being bad since the Lionel Tech said it was probably a bad velocity circuit board. Sounds like the same thing to me. I assume that this circuit board has failed before on other engines since the Tech didn't have to think about it. My return authorization came today and my GP7 is packed up for a trip to the post office and then on to Michigan Monday.

Thank you guys!

I have a similar problem with my new Lionel GP 7. I'm using TMCC but not Legacy. The engine ran great for a few laps around my fastrack loop then took off like a bullet. The other features seem to work but as soon as I touch the red dial on my remote it takes off at full speed. I have not tried it in reverse or in conventional so don't know if it will do the same thing.

I purchased it on preorder from Trainz, they said to send it in and they'll have alook. I hope it's an easy and quick fix. Love that GP 7 in Great Northern.

Hi cheese

Sounds like the same problem. Mine worked fine in conventional, but of course then I could regulate the voltage to the track and it's speed with the transformer. I sent it out this morning. Lionel claims to try and get it back in 4 weeks from recieving it.
We shall see.

Well it took 7 full weeks, but I got my GP7 back from Lionel. Co-incidentally it arrived the same day my Legacy returned from it's upgrade so I was able to check them both out. I wish I would have checked closer to Bob Karas advice because Lionel said it was a loose flywheel.
Needless to say, it works great now and I can boast a lot of enjoyment from this Legacy system.

Good for you Campy! It is well worth the wait to have a great running Legacy system! I just personally discovered if you touch the ENG or TR button after locking on an engine the screen "changes icons" and some different buttons appear on the bottom. One is a startup sequence where engineer is told to start his engine. One of them is marked Speed Limit. This button also works with my TMCC E-7 engines as does the stop and the start buttons also. jon from Lionel wrote there were some hidden features on the later TMCC / RailSound 5.0 engines that Legacy would awaken. He was right! Running Legacy engines like my GP-7 Legacy Trailer Train and TMCC E-7 passenger train is the most fun a Guy could want...
The old Cab1 remote is for the Lionel TMCC caboose so I can uncouple and make a set-off without having to change screens on the legacy remote..

Thanks for the tip on the "Changing Icons". I have one question about your neat layout ... on the left of your photo ... what is the control with the yellow buttons for? I have one that came with a parts lot off of eBay. The buttons have K Line's logo on them and it says "Smoke" and "SAN" on it.
